Highland Recorder November 7, 1957 HIGHLAND COUNTY YOUTH REPORTED KILLED IN KOREA Mr. and Mrs. Luther Varner of Monterey received word Friday that their son Pfc. John William Varner had been killed in action in the Korean Area on October 27. from the War Department, Washington, D.C., and that arrangements would be made to ship the body home for burial soon. Pfc. Varner was a graduate of Monterey High School and was employed in the Highland Mercantile Company prior to his induction into the Marine Corps. He received his basic training at Parris Island, S.C. A brother Charles Varner is serving in the army and is stationed in the Korean area. Other than his brother and his parent, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Russell, Fay, Don and Delmar Varner. Mrs. Lawrence Beverage, Mrs. Dale Gum and Miss Geneva Varner all of Monterey, Jake Varner and Robert Varner of Staunton. January 2, 1953 MILITARY RITES FOR PVT. JOHN W. VARNER Funeral services were held Sun day, Dec 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Monterey Methodist Church by the Rev. H. Warren Landis assisted by Rev. A. E. Johnson with full military honors for Pfc. John William Varner of Monterey. Pfc. Varner was born July 5, 1931, (being aged 21 yrs., 3 mos., and 22 days.) He graduated with the class of 1950 at Monterey High School, and entered the Service, April 9, 1952. He took his basic training at Marine Base, Paris Island, SC. On Sept. 15, 1952 he sailed for overseas and lost his life on Oct. 27, 1952. He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Varner and the following brothers and sisters: Russell, Don, Fay, of Monterey Mrs. Lawrence Beverage and Mrs. Dale Gum, Monterey, Jacob and Robert, Staunton, Delmer and Geneva at home, Charles who was serving with Korean forces and returned with his brother's body from overseas, and a host of nieces and nephews.
