Published in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on August 12, 1955 ----- County law enforcement officials were scheduled to meet this afternoon to combine information in the shooting of Manuel DeBorrow last Thursday in his home between Soquel and Aptos. Chief Investigator Gary Smith, District Attorney Charles L. Moore and Coroner Charles Johnson will confer regarding the possiblity of placing a formal charge against Estelle DeBorrow, 28, wife of the victim. Mrs. DeBorrow, who has denied shooting her spouse with a .12 gauge shotgun, has been under close observation in the county hospital since early Friday morning. She originally stated that DeBorrow had been cleaning the weapon when it discharged, killing him instantly. Both Smith and Johnson doubted her statement due to the fact no gun cleaning equipment was near the scene. Published in the Santa Cruz Sentinel on August 15, 1955 ----- Estelle DeBorrow, Aptos housewife, has admitted to firing a blast from a .12 gauge shotgun which killed her husband, Manuel DeBorrow, instantly last Thursday night in their Soquel drive home, District Attorney Charles L. Moore anounced today. Moore said late this morning that a first degree murder charge would be filed and the case handed to the grand jury. The statement came Sunday afternoon from the Santa Cruz county hospital where Mrs. DeBorrow, 28, has been kept while being treated for hysteria and shock. According to Moore, she stated in her report that DeBorrow asked her to get his double-barrel shotgun because he wanted to go hunting. When she returned with the weapon they began kidding and she pointed the gun at him. He told her it didn't make any difference because the gun wasn't loaded. The mother of three children, by a former marriage, said she then pulled the trigger, the charge entering the victim's right eye and tearing away a large section of his skull. Moore has summoned a psychiatrist from San Jose to examine the woman to determine her mental state and whether or not she could stand'up under a jury trial in the near future. It is known that Mrs. DeBorrow has been treated for an ailment which might have been the result of a past accident in which she suffered head injuries, authorities said. There still remains an Important question to be answered in the case. The district attorney wants to know who loaded the gun. Mrs. DeBorrow stated she didn't know the gun was loaded.
