Robert Hafer Fisher of Geneva, killed in action in Belgium, January 11, 1945, was held in the Methodist church at 2:30 Sunday, February 25. In spite of a near blizzard a good sized crowd paid tribute to one of Fillmore county's boys who made the supreme sacrifice in the present great world war. Rev. Elmer R. Peterson, pastor of the church gave the memorial address, Chaplain Angus Dun Jr., of the Fairmont Army Air Field assisted, reading the scripture and offering prayer. Music was furnished by a quartet from the Methodist choir. E. R. Montgomery, Mrs. H. A. Rosenau, Dixie Beth Winchell and C. G. Hrubesky, with Mrs. Hrubesky as accompanist. At the conclusion of the service taps were sounded by Paul Curtiss. Robert Hafer Fisher, only son of Donald and Bernice Fisher, was born March 4, 1923, on a farm near Geneva, Neb. He was killed in action January 11, 1945, near Libramont, Belgium. At the time of his death he was 21 years, 10 months and 7 days old. Robert graduated from Geneva high school in 1943. Previous to his induction into the United States Army, he worked in a war industrial plant in California. His military service began February 11, 1943, when he was sent to Camp McCain, Miss., for basic training in an engineer battalion. He was sent from there to Fort Jackson, S. C., from where he received his last furlough before going overseas. He left for overseas October 1, 1944. The medals he received give proof that he was a loyal and faithful soldier. His division commander in a letter to his father said: "I want to tell you that all of us who remain in the division grieve with you in the loss of our comrade. He did his duty splendidly, and was loved and admired by all who knew him. We will not forget. He gave his life in battle in the service of his country. These simple words cannot lighten our sorrow, but they bring great pride and inspiration to us all." He leaves to mourn his death, his father and step-mother of York, Neb., two sisters, Maxine, Mrs. Joe Dearking of Geneva, and Marjorie, Mrs. Merle West of Santa Ana, Cal., his grandfather, Henry E. Fisher of Geneva, and a nephew Eldon Merle West of Santa Ana, Cal. Robert's mother died when he was eleven years old and now he is gone to be with her.
