Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Community Bible Church, Murdo, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. Sam was born on Feb. 29, 1932, at home near Okaton to Nickolas E. and Elizabeith (Hoekman) Daum. He was the seventh of 11 children. Sam grew up near Okaton, attended school there and graduated from Murdo High School in 1950. After working on the family farm near Okaton he attended college at South Dakota State University, after which he served in the U.S. Army (an experience which supplied him with many stories). Following the service Sam worked on the family farm, continued his education at the University of Denver and then taught high school in Draper. While in Denver though he met the love of his life and on June 28, 1962, in Aurora Center he married Rose Houtkooper. Life's adventures for Sam and Rose always included farming, though Sam taught one year of high school in Midland and attended graduate school at SDSU and USD. In 1969 they returned their young family to Jones County, then they made Murdo their home and became "city-farmers." Sam sold feed for more than 20 years and continued to farm until his death. He was a 40-year member of the Gideons International, was a member of the Okaton Evangelical Free Church and in more recent years the Community Bible Church in Murdo. He always loved to tell stories of his boyhood and Army adventures. He was the weatherman of the family, always giving a local forecast by watching the clouds. He enjoyed attending his children's school events, keeping up to date on world events and his favorite sports teams the Twins, Vikings and Cornhuskers. He is survived by his wife of 43 years,4 children and 1 grandson. He is also survived by his 7 siblings. Sam also had many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
