He was born in Winslow, Feb. 3, 1927, the son of Joseph and Emma (Bernard) Bernard. He attended Waterville schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked in the picking room at Wyandotte Mill for several years. His favorite song was "You are my Sunshine." He enjoyed a pot of tea and crepes, playing 'rummy,' old movies and wrestling. He was predeceased by his wife,... Read More	PVT US ARMY - WORLD WAR II WATERVILLE, ME -- Walter "Bedu" Joseph Bernard, 81, died Monday, June 16, 2008, at Lakewood Manor in Waterville. He was born in Winslow, Feb. 3, 1927, the son of Joseph and Emma (Bernard) Bernard. He attended Waterville schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked in the picking room at Wyandotte Mill for several years. His favorite song was "You are my Sunshine." He enjoyed a pot of tea and crepes, playing 'rummy,' old movies and wrestling. He was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Diana (Denis) Bernard; his parents; a grandson, Brian. Survivors include five daughters, Diane Bernard of South Monmouth, Susan J. Giguere and husband, James, of Benton; Gail A. Burwood and husband, Carl, of Waterville; Jane Allen of Waterville, and Barbara Bernard of Fairfield; a son, John Bernard of South China; two sisters, Sadie Gagne of Waterville and Fern Bilodeau of Winslow; six grandchildren, Kelly, Molly, Shawn, Katy, Rachel and Derek; and five great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Lakewood Manor for their care and concerns. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Notre Dame Church, 116 Silver St., Waterville. Committal prayers and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, with Deacon Dean Lachance officiating.
