Description	:	Philbin D. Wheatley, a kind and humble man, died May 29, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill. A small stroke, then pneumonia led to his death. He was born Sept. 12, 1919, to William Allen and Martha Sanders Wheatley. He was a lifelong resident of Boone County. He was a graduate of Scott High School in Madison and Marshall University with a B.A. in education. He taught in the Boone County school system for about 33 years. Wheatley, a kind and humble man, died May 29, 2007, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill. A small stroke, then pneumonia led to his death. He was born Sept. 12, 1919, to William Allen and Martha Sanders Wheatley. He was a lifelong resident of Boone County. He was a graduate of Scott High School in Madison and Marshall University with a B.A. in education. He taught in the Boone County school system for about 33 years. He and his wife Jewell were the teachers in a two-room school in Manila many years. When Manila school closed, both taught at Ramage Elementary until their retirement. The most influential time of his life occurred with his service during World War II. He served in a glider unit with the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army assigned for four and a half years overseas; Normandy, Holland, Battle of the Bulge, Casablanca, Naples, Italy were a few of his stops. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 1, 1945. Phil was so very proud of his country and for the freedoms for which he fought. He was married to Jewell L. Smith Wheatley on July 11, 1946. She preceded him in death on April 11, 2000. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Dalmond, Arden and Emil; and sisters, Iris, Neva and Nelda. Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Jean Richmond "Jeannie" and her husband, William F., of Beckley; a grandson, Scott, his wife, Anna, and a newborn, Alex, of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Christina and her husband, Michael Holliday, and infant son, Andrew, of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Mina Ball of Ramage; many nieces and nephews; and a wonderful neighbor, Richard Knight of Madison. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Pastor John Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.
