Philip Gatch Jeans was born in Milford, Ohio, June 15th, 1816, and died in Hillsboro, Ohio, Saturday, September 2nd, 1899. He was the oldest son of Joseph and Sarah Jeans. The family of twelve children are now all departed with the exception of one, Mrs. Kate Loomis, now living in California. After leaving school he spent the greater part of his younger life traveling. While in Indiana, at age of 21, he became a mason. His work in this line can only be told by his brother masons. For a number of years he was occupied at his trade in Perintown. On the 11th of March, 1850, he left Perintown for the "Gold Fields" of California. His diary written while on this trip is still preserved and is very interesting. From California he returned to Perintown in 1851. On the 6th day of January, 1853 he was married to Sarah Hibben, Rev. J. McD. Matthews being the officiating clergyman. The ceremony took place at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. John Hibben, on the site where the post office now stands. . . After his marriage he followed his trade for a number of years and then engaged in the mercantile business until February 28th, 1873 when he entered into partnership with Mr. Charles Utman in the lumber and planning mill business, which partnership continued for the remaining portion of his life on earth. To him and his devoted wife, four children were born. Two have passed into the great beyond and are awaiting the reunion of the family. He leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. J. G. Perin and son Frank Jeans, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren to mourn his departure. . .
