Description	:	WESTBROOK -- Philip George Allard, 78, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2006, at his home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. He was born in Westbrook on Nov. 12, 1927, the son of Ralph and Lucie Doe Allard. He was a lifelong resident of Westbrook, attended local schools, and was employed by SD Warren for almost 35 years. Read More	WESTBROOK -- Philip George Allard, 78, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2006, at his home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. He was born in Westbrook on Nov. 12, 1927, the son of Ralph and Lucie Doe Allard. He was a lifelong resident of Westbrook, attended local schools, and was employed by SD Warren for almost 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Hickman Air Force Base in Hawaii in the 1940s, and while there played baseball (he was a pitcher) for the Air Force. When asked what he did during the war, he would say it was his job to keep the guy from first base from getting to second base. He frequently talked about hitting a home run with a bat Joe DiMaggio had used. After returning from Hawaii, he played minor league baseball for the Cincinnati Reds in North Carolina for a season. He was a lifelong Yankees fan, and had been tapped on the shoulder by Babe Ruth, who asked him, How you doing, kid? He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, and spent many happy hours in Standish at the family hunting mansion. He enjoyed playing cards, going to Scarborough Downs, and trips to Atlantic City and Foxwoods. He regaled his family with his songs, his poetry, and his jokes, and he leaves behind a legacy of writings and music, not all of which could be shown during Family Hour. He married the former Helen (Jackie) Boothby in November of 1950. He is survived by his wife; six children, Martha (John) Bolte of Hollis, Philip (Becky) Allard of Raymond, Pamela (Larry) Smith of Buxton, Steven of Westbrook, Timothy (JoAnn) Allard of Gorham, and Kathleen (Tim) West of Buxton; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ralph Allard of Westbrook, and sister Catherine Fernald of Westbrook. He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Wood, in 1976.
