Read More	The Carroll Times, Carroll, Iowa Thursday, 1908-12-31 Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, 1908, at two o'clock, there passed away at her home at Lidderdale, Mrs. F. Schug, wife of Cashier Schug of the Lidderdale State Bank. Departed had been ill of catarrh of the stomach for a long time, for the past six months her life had been one long period of intense suffering. Treatment at the hospital in this city had given but temporary relief and the aged patient longed to be home, near the husband and daughter who did all that love could suggest for her relief. During the past six weeks the services of a trained nurse were added to the efforts of members of the family to ease the pain, bring surcease to the weary body. She knew that dissolution was at hand and gladly surrendered her will to that of the Heavenly Father. Monday afternoon while Pastor Schmidt was praying with her, she thanked him for his solicitude, bade him farewell and signified her joy and readiness to go hence. Those were her last words, she passed into a state of unconsciousness, lingering until death came early next morning. Philippine Voelpel was born at Bischelm, in the Palatinate (Reinpfaiz) Germany, May 16, 1838, she was therefore 70 years, 7 months and 13 days old at her death. While still a baby her paretns were both called by relentless Death and she was reared by her grandparents until at the age of 12, she was placed in the care of pastor Kraemer at Ilbeshelm, where she was well schooled and confirmed according to modest christian womanhood and in 1868 followed her betrothed, Pastor F. Schug, who had preceded her to this country, their marriage taking place in New York, upon her arrival in that city. They soon after left for the West and for seven years Pastor Schug officiated in Wisconsin. About 1870 they came to Grant City, Sac County, Iowa, where again the faithful wife shared the pioneer labors of the pastor, participating in the efforts to build up struggling parishes, soothing grief and alleviating suffering among those gathered about them in spiritual union. After 15 years residence in Sac County they removed to Ida county, but later again returned to Sac where they remained until they came to Lidderdale where Mr. Schug acquired the bank about two and a half years ago. There survive the departed her grief stricken husband aforesaid, and the following children: Mrs. Louise Mohr and F. A. Schug, Auburn, Iowa. Otto Schug, Ida County, Iowa, and Mrs. Martha Hartwig, who made her home with her parents at Lidderdale. Two children preceded the mother to the better land. There also survive her 20 grand children to join in the mourning for the beloved grandmother. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday by Pastor H. P. Schmidt of Emanuel Lutheran church, Sheridan township, after which the remains were brought to this city to be interred in the city cemetery. She whom loving hands tenderly placed to the bosom of Mother Earth, her last resting place, was a loving wife, a true Chrisitian mother who combined, under her womanly modesty and affection, the qualities of a heroine sympathy, devotion, courage and endurance without limit. Hopeful for the better things of the future, cheerful under adversity, buoyant of spirit and with an unfailing trust in God, she went through life bearing her own burdens as they were placed on her shoulders, but cheering and encouraging others who might falter by the way and failed to see the star of hope. She was patient when suffering came as a last trial are caleld from this to a better life. She was strong in faith and bore her cross with an abiding reliance in the Redeemer. To her vision came the rays of light from eternal heights when mortal eye no longer perceived terrestrial scenes. Ere loving ones gathering breathlessly about that bed of pain could lisp a last farewell life's battle was over and she who had fought the good fight had gone to be rewarded with the crown of everlasting life. ---------------------------------------------- NOTE: Her maiden name was spelled Voeifal, on her husband's obituary.
