When he was quite young his parents and family emigrated to the USA and settled in Lake County, Illinois. Here, in later years Phillip met and married Miss Catherine Finnegan, daughter of Edward Finnegan. Two children were born to them while they lived in Illinois: Edward Joseph (1853-1933) and Mary (1857 -1929). When son Edward was about eight years old (about 1861), the family moved to northeastern Iowa. A third child, Catherine “Kate” (1862-1933) was born near Waukon, Allamakee County, Iowa. However, there is no known record of the family residing in that county. Rather, Phillip was later referred to as “one of the early settlers of Chickasaw County, where he had a farm on Crane Creek for about five years. After a flood on the creek caused an appreciable loss of crops, he moved his family to a nearby farm located 5 1/2 miles south and ½ mile east of Lawler, Iowa, and about 4 ½ miles east and north of Fredericksburg, Iowa. In the years that followed the move to Chickasaw County, the family grew with the births of Elise “Lisa” (1863-1943), Julia (1864-1939), Alice 1865-1881), Jennie (868-1922), Thomas (about 1865-1935), and Rosetta “Rose” (1876-1939). By this time Mary had started teaching school, and her son Edward had become a skilled buttermaker at a creamery he operated on the McBride farm. It was a skill that would determine the future course of his life and that of two of his sisters. In 1887 Edward left the Iowa farm to become the second buttermaker in the state of Nebraska, at the Fairmont Creamery. In 1896 Phillip and Catherine retired from the farm, leaving the house they had built in about 1884, and moved into the town of Lawler, Iowa. That same year their son Thomas married Alice Jane Hoye (1869-1942). They were married in St. Rose Church, east of Lawler, and continued to operate the family farm. They had four known children: Collette Ann (born 1899), Frank Jerome (born 1902), Edward Donald (190-1961), AND Alice Louella (born 1909). On March 2, 1897 Phillip and Catherine’s daughter Catherine “Kate” married James Branagan (he died 1939), son of John Branagan, at the church in Lawler. They lived on the Branagan homestead and they had one son, Joseph E. (1902-1934). Joseph never married. Phillip and Catherine’s daughters Julia and Jennie joined their brother Edward in Blue Hill, Nebraska. Then in 1899 Jennie married David Byrne (1857-1936), a native of Lungannon, Ireland. They married in Hastings, Nebraska. David was in the general merchandise business in Bladen and Blue Hill, Nebraska. Later, his business took him to Grand Island, Nebraska and to Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sterling, Colorado. Jennie and David had three known children: Catherine Cecelia (born 1900), Francis Henry (1905-1976), and Vincent Patrick (born 1912). Phillip and Catherine’s daughters Elisa, Julia, Alice, and Rosetta never married. Alice died at age 16 and is buried in Lawler. Rosetta died in 1939 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery there. Julia lived with her sister Jennie and Jennie’s husband David. She died in Sterling, CO in 1939 and is buried in Riverdale Cemetery there. Elisa died in 1943 in Dubuque, Iowa, and is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery there. Phillip McBride died in 1907 and is buried in the cemetery of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Lawler, Iowa. His wife Catherine Finnegan McBride died in 1914 and is buried in the same cemetery. Their grave marker(s) were broken and disposed of during a cemetery clean-up. And since a fire destroyed cemetery records the exact location of Phillip and Catherine’s graves is uncertain.
