Showers was born in Miffland County, Pennsylvania, November 9, 1844, and died at his home in Fraser, Iowa, July 17, 1909, aged 64 years, 8 months and 3 days. He spent his childhood and youth at the parental home and attended the country school until fitted for the academy, at which place he acquired a more than normal education. After leaving the academy he taught school until called to serve his country in the civil war. He enlisted in Company C, 101st Pennsylvania regiment and was honorably discharged June 26, 1865. He spent some time in Illinois and then came to Boone county, Iowa, in 1868 and spent the remainder of his life here. In 1869 he was united in marriage with Miss Alice E. Wilson. To this union were born 15 children, 8 sons and 7 daughters. Three sons have preceded him beyond the great divide. Those remaining are William H., Mrs. Frank Walters, Mrs. George Hinnman, Charles D., Edward L, Mrs. Charles Ahrends, Mrs. C.V. Davis, Phillip C., Mrs. C.Lucas, James P., Jennie and Florence at home. All reside near the parental home except Mrs. Lucas who lives at Enterprise, and all were present at the funeral. On November 24, 1905, he was stricken with paralysis and was confined to his bed continuously until death released him from his suffering. During this time he was ever patient and resigned, and a short time previous to his death he expressed a desire to endure as long as God willed he should. Mr. Showers was a good husband, a kind father and honest citizen who made no enemies. He leaves his faithful wife, who so kindly ministered to his wants during the long period of his suffering, his noble children and many friends to mourn his departure and cherish him in their memories. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Fraser, at 2:00 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Davis and Rev. Morris. The pallbearers were old soldiers, Messrs Royster, Harris and Castine, of Pilot Mound, and Messrs Wright, Dodge and Sarber of Fraser. He was laid to rest in the Mineral Ridge cemetery. The sorrowing ones have the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
