His siblings included two siblings who died young: Wendelin and Eva, and five others: William, Marie, Klara, a second Wendelin, and Gertrude. His father died when he was young (1858) and his mother moved the family to the United States, looking for better opportunities. His father died when he was young (1858) and his mother moved the family to the United States, looking for better opportunities. He arrived in New York with his mother and siblings William, Mary, Gertrude, and Wendelin when he was 12, on 26 April 1861. We are not sure what happened to Klara. The family lived in New York for at least a couple of years before moving. Some of the family may have moved to Connecticut because that is where his brother William enlisted into the Civil War in December of 1863. Certainly some moved on to Wisconsin by the end of the war since they are found there by 1866. While in New York, Philip learned the cabinetry trade. Stories of him by his children note that he was apprenticed to a cabinet maker while there. By 1866, family history says he made his way to Wisconsin where his brothers had both homesteaded. He farmed there for a bit but by 1874 he had moved west to Wyoming (Cheyenne and Laramie) where he was in the stock business. Around 1879 he was in San Francisco and had opened a cabinet shop. He left San Francisco because, according to his son Ralph, "an earthquake shook him out." After leaving California, he was in Portland, Oregon for a short time before settling in Washington State. There he chose a piece of land to farm that was rich with springs near Gravelle, Washington. In an 1970s era interview, his daughter Zinnia indicated that "he lived for a number of a years in a cave in the hillside partly for protection from the indians." His son Ralph called his lodings a "dug out." In either case, within the first year or so he had built himself a log cabin in which to live. He married Anna Proff, from Rosalia, Washington, on 1 March 1899. Together they were parents to four children: Ralph, Albert, Charles, and Zinnia. The first two, Ralph and Albert, were born in the log cabin, and later two, Charlie and Zinnia, were born in a frame house built in 1904. Between 1904 and 1909, Phillip and Anna hosted eastern relatives who came to work or visit. Phillip's brothers Wendelin and William both visited, though they did not visit together. Nephews from both brothers also came to work in the wheat fields for harvest time, to visit before homesteading in Alberta, or to settle in before finding their own farms in the area. Additionally, Phillip's cousin Godfried Hein, son of Johan Alois and Catherine Hein, sometimes visited. Godfried had moved west from Sheboygan and settled in Waverly, only 50 miles from Phillip. In 1905 Phillip went north with some of his nephews and purchased 240 acres of land near Ohaton, Alberta. The land was owned but not homesteaded, and later sold. Phillip and Anna were married only 10 years to the day. He was diabetic and died due to the disease on 1 March 1909. _______________________ Because we do not know where his parents are buried, sibling links are not possible in the normal fashion.
