Description	:	Zinnia was born to Philip and Anna (Proff) Hein on February 15, 1907 in Gravelle, WA. In 1912 she started first grade at age 5 because the Gravelle one room school teacher boarded at her mothers and the teacher thought she was ready for school. In 1920 she entered Reardan High School. She and girlfriends "batched" at various homes in Reardan so that they could attend high school. She enjoyed being on the girls basketball team. Read More	Zinnia was born to Philip and Anna (Proff) Hein on February 15, 1907 in Gravelle, WA. In 1912 she started first grade at age 5 because the Gravelle one room school teacher boarded at her mothers and the teacher thought she was ready for school. In 1920 she entered Reardan High School. She and girlfriends "batched" at various homes in Reardan so that they could attend high school. She enjoyed being on the girls basketball team. She graduated from Reardan High School in 1924 and then attended Cheney Normal to obtain her teaching certificate. She taught on the elementary certificate for two years at South Egypt, about 15 miles north of Davenport, WA. She lived with Reinbold's and knew them all by name. Went back to Cheney Normal for another year to get her Life Certificate to teach. In 1928, she taught one year at Greasy Run, a one room school. It was north of Reardan and she boarded with Perschal's. (Greasy Run was about 3 miles straight north of Zwainz Farm.) She married George Leo Zwainz on December 4, 1929 at the Lady of Lourdes Rectory. In 1930, Robert Edward was born on October 4. Zinnia and George moved to Reardan to the Riffe house every winter after 1936 when Bob started 1st grade because the road to the farm was not maintained very well. Zinnia went to Gravelle most weekends to care for her mother, Anna, who was a double amputee from diabetes. In 1948-49 George, with the help of Charlie Garber, built their new home in Reardan at Spokane and Aspen St. and they did all the work and painting. During all of the years, Zinnia was a wonderful seamstress, creating many works of embroidery and knitting. She was a 4-H leader of the Garden Club, taking many prizes with her lovely flower arrangements at the Federated Garden Club Shows and Lincoln County Fair. She was a very active member of Spring Creek Grange since 1931, being part of many drill and degree teams as well as winning numerous sewing and needlework contests at local, Pomona, State and National Grange. She did some acrylic paintings in later years. Zinnia enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, square dancing, and ball room dancing, especially the waltz. Bridge, golf, crossword puzzles and being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were very important to her. Their first grandson Rodney Robert, was born on their 24th anniversary, December 4, 1953. In 1954, she joined St. Michael's Catholic Church. George and Zinnia retired from active farming when Bob returned from the Army. They had both taken up golf and were active members of the Manito Golf and Country Club until George's death in 1989. They both enjoyed the thrill of having hole-in-one's more than once. They spent 1 or 2 months a year in Southern California for many years, golfing and visiting George's brother and sister-in-law, Anton and Marge Zwainz. In 1957 Zinnia worked with Mary Rux to design and build the very first Reardan Float for the Lilac Parade so that the Reardan High School band could participate. It was also 1957 when her second grandson, Thomas George was born August 15. In August of 2000, Zinnia moved with "Kitty" to the Davenport Retirement Village. She thoroughly enjoyed the companionship of her new friends and the fun card games every night after Billie Mill's wonderful meals. She enjoyed good health with only minor surgeries and no broken bones. All of that walking, dancing, golf, bridge, crossword puzzles and being a helpful friend to many has helped her to live comfortably until the end of 2002 when she was admitted to the hospital. She moved to the Lincoln Nursing Home in Davenport on January 7, 2003 and resided there until her death September 13, 2004. [from Funeral Program]
