He was married to Amanda Macklin at Oakfield, Iowa, in 1876. To this union was born thirteen children, five boys and eight girls, five boys and two girls are dead, all dying in infancy except Erma who died two years ago. The deceased has resided in Coon Rapids for almost 33 years He leaves a wife and six daughters, five brothers and two sisters. Three married daughters are Mrs. Frank Willard of Jefferson, Iowa, Mrs. E. O. Pharis. of Peoria, Illinois, Mrs. Fred Tillmer of Sioux City, Iowa. Rev. Brown conducted the funeral services at the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon, a large number of friends being in attendance. Phil Kesselring was struck and killed by the local passenger train No. 34 Monday morning. He was thrown about forty feet and then rolled down the embankment. One side of his head was badly crushed in where it is supposed to have struck a tie, both arms were broken at the shoulder and one leg had a compound fracture. All the ribs in his body were broken or torn loose as testified to by Dr. Henry at the inquest. Death of course was instantaneous. The train crew picked up the remains and brought them back to town and they were at once taken in charge by Undertaker Graham. There were many conflicting reports as to how the accident happened, but the coroner's inquest brought out the apparent facts. Phil bad been at the pump house, which was near the bridge and the place of accident, visiting with Pumper Clemmer. Phil left the pump house just before the train arrived and seeing a water hose lying across the wagon road, which runs between the railroad track and the pump house, (used by the compressor car crew), which he thought was, or would be in the way of John Glenn, who was using the road, stepped to the window of the compressor car to notify the compressor force to disconnect the hose so that John Glenn could drive over the road. The compressor was making a great deal of noise and Phil had difficulty to make the men in the car hear him and while thus standing talking, with bis back toward the train, the cylinder of the engine struck him on the hip. The compressor car stands about six feet only away from the main railroad track and Phil appeared at the time of the accident to have had one foot on a tie and the other on a step to the compressor car. The testimony of the compressor car men went to show that though the passenger locomotive bell was ringing and though a bridge workman but a few feet, distant from Phil, shouted to him, endeavoring to warn him of his danger, that the noise of the compressor was so great that Phil could not have heard the warning, nor the bell nor the running of the train. The engineer of the passenger train testified that when in about four feet of Phil he suddenly turned and faced the locomotive and jumped on the track, apparently greatly excited. But the testimony of Mr. Ramsey and his son of the compressor car, said in substance that the engineer was mistaken. That Phil did not turn about and face the locomotive and all the evidence from the wounds show that the engineer was wrong, that Phil was struck in the back in the region of the hip. and could not have stepped on the track facing the train. This tells the whole story. The compressor car is so near the track that Foreman Ramsey says that be constantly warns sightseers and others away, especially boys, and knew of no reason why Phil should call his attention to the hose. Clemmer says that he had been disconnecting the hose for days and on the morning of the accident just as Phil left the pump station, disconnected the hose so, that Phil's notification to the compressor crew to disconnect was unnecessary. But there are some who seem to believe that Phil was sent by Clemmer to the compressor car to notify the force there to disconnect the hose, though nothing of this nature was brought out in the testimony before the coroner's jury, Clemmer emphatically denies the story; that it was not the car crew's business to tend to the hose but his own which duty he had been performing for some time. If it could be established that Kesselring was really instructed to bear the message he was giving the compressor car force, in which act he lost his life, the railroad company might be held responsible, but if Phil was asked to bear such message, it is not likely that anyone knew of it but Phil, and the pumper, and Phil's lips are forever sealed, and Clemmer states that Phil was not asked to communicate with the bridge force, hence the case is apparently closed, But Clemmer's statement, in view of the fact that be bad been disconnecting the hose would seem reasonable. Phillip Kesselring came to Carroll county about forty years ago, about thirty of this time living at Coon Rapids. He followed well digging and drilling and such other work and was one of the best men with spade and shovel in the country. He was industrious and honest and of social nature. He filled his place in the world, as a workmen, quite well and the men who handle the spade, like those who handle the trowel and hammer and saw, are as needful as builders as are the men of wealth who furnish the means to construct the work which the builders do. Phil had many accidents, many narrow escapes from death, so many in fact that he seemed to live a charmed life as though he would die a natural death, but at last a fatal accident overtook him. Phil had a fault but let that pass. Everybody has a kind word to say of him. The coroner's verdict was that deceased came to his death through accident in accordance with the facts as above given. The jury was composed of Perry Loughry, Wm. Bower and a Mr. Brown of Carroll.
