Phillip Michael Sledge was born Feb. 2, 1989, in Omaha, the second of two children to Kathryn Lynn Jacquot-Sledge and Michael (Earnest) Parker Sledge. Phil spent his childhood in Omaha, where Michael and Kathy had moved from Colorado Springs, Colo. Michael and Kathy met while Kathy attended college at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and moved to Colorado after her graduation. After moving back to Omaha, Michael worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in Lincoln, and together they owned Cuming Street Liquor Store, a business operated with Michael’s family. Phil very much enjoyed spending time with his father - going to the gym, eating lunch together, and working at the Store together. Phil would help his father re-stock candy, groceries and soda, simply enjoying each other’s company. Sundays were an important day to the family. They would always spend it together, starting with going to Mass. Then they would do something new and exciting, like taking an impromptu road trip to Kansas City. The family took a vacation in July 1999 and drove to Colorado Springs, Colo., to enjoy family time and relaxation. Phil also enjoyed going fishing with his Grandpa Claude Sledge Sr. His mother commented that they would disappear for hours, bringing home the fish for Kathy to cook. Phil very much enjoyed time with his aunts, uncles and cousins and remembers fondly the 2008 Sledge Family Reunion. Phil attended Catholic school at St James Seton Catholic Elementary School and Roncalli Catholic High School, where he graduated in May 2008. During this time, he worked at Arts for All, Inc, an educational artistic program designed to be affordable for all. Phil believed, as he stated, that “Art itself is its own reward.” He enjoyed trying different mediums along his artistic journey, experimenting with canvas painting and wood burning, to name a few. This form of expression was so dear and important to him. He also enjoyed music, learning to play guitar and the trombone. Phil attended Metropolitan Community College from 2009-2012, studying Microcomputer Technology. He was on the Dean’s List in June 2010 and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Oct. 29, 2010. His plan was to continue college elsewhere after his graduation. At times he’d contemplated going into a Seminary for the Priesthood. Phil and his family were members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish where Phil made his First Communion and received Confirmation. Phil was active with SEA’s Life Teen Youth Group program, participating in retreats and the Overflow program. Patrick Stahr, a Life Teen group leader, knew Phil through helping with the retreats. He remembers him fondly: “I was blessed to get to know him. He didn’t worry about what the world thought of him, just being the best witness he could be. Living his life according to the will of Jesus was what Phil was about.” Phil’s father fought a battle with laryngeal cancer courageously for several years. Phil received his Senior Class ring at Roncalli HS the same day his father had been hospitalized for the last time during his life, in 2006. Phil’s ring had a cross set in a ruby red jewel, a sign of his deep faith. Then just five weeks later, his father passed away, just two days before Phil’s 17th birthday. He wrote that he was proud to carry on his father’s name and legacy. Though his father was gone, he was never forgotten and never would be. Phil made sure of that. Phil cared for his mother Kathy is that same loving way. Phil was preceded in death by his father, Michael (Earnest) Parker Sledge, 2006; paternal grandparents, Claude Sledge Sr. and Ora Lee Sledge; maternal grandparents, Cecil Xavier Jacquot and Meta Christine (Steinmeyer) Jacquot, 2001; aunt, Mary Elaine Jacquot, 1940; uncle, Gerald Cecil Jacquot, 2000; and cousin, Christina Miller Stellings, 2009. His mother, Kathryn Lynn Jacquot-Sledge, passed away Dec. 16, 2014. The memory of Phil’s kindness and devotion to the Lord will continue to live on. While God has him in his arms, his family has him in their hearts forever. Phil is survived by his sister, Melissa Leigh Sledge, Omaha; aunts and uncles, Phyllis Jean and Bill Miller, Anchorage Alaska; Marita Christine and KC Gottschalk, Broken Bow; Patricia Anne Downey and Mary Louise Coffman, both of Broken Bow; William Joseph and Jan Jacquot, Loveland Colo.; great-aunts, Bernice Miller and Lois Morrison, both of Broken Bow; Claudette and Terry Spencer, Kenneth and Patricia Sledge, Claude Sledge Jr., Frank Sledge, all of Omaha; and a whole host of cousins, and many friends and loved ones.
