Description	:	Phillip M. Smith Phillip M. Smith, 97, of North Platte, passed away Dec. 4, 2011, at his home. He was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in North Platte, in the Graceland addition, to Everett and Iva Zinken Smith. He lived in North Platte until they moved to a farm by Wellfleet, then on to a farm Northeast of Ericson, where he attended grade school and one year of high school. Another move took them to a ranch by the Cedar River, where he said it was the best years of his life. He did a lot of hunting and fishing.... Read More	Phillip M. Smith Phillip M. Smith, 97, of North Platte, passed away Dec. 4, 2011, at his home. He was born on Aug. 1, 1914, in North Platte, in the Graceland addition, to Everett and Iva Zinken Smith. He lived in North Platte until they moved to a farm by Wellfleet, then on to a farm Northeast of Ericson, where he attended grade school and one year of high school. Another move took them to a ranch by the Cedar River, where he said it was the best years of his life. He did a lot of hunting and fishing. Phillip finished high school and one year of law, graduating with a teacher's diploma. The depression of the '30s broke his father and they lost everything. The bank sold them out in the spring of 1934. There were no jobs to be had, and they moved back to North Platte. Phillip joined the U.S. Conservation Corp and built dams and other work. Phillip met Marie Miller and they were married in Manly on Nov. 9, 1936, and moved to North Platte in 1937. He held down various jobs and on Feb. 28, 1942, he hired out on the Union Pacific Railroad working as a Carman and Heavy Equipment Operator until May 31, 1976, when he retired. Phillip was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Union Pacific Old Timers Club. He enjoyed fishing, doing crafts and cooking. Survivors are two daughters, Judy (Fred) Fisher, of Lincoln, and Carol (Woodrow) Boyer, of North Platte; one son, Ray (Tressie) Smith, of Lemoyne; 18 grandchildren, Beth (Robert) Barlow, of Grand Island, Rebecca Fisher, of Lincoln, Deborah Fisher, of North Platte, Trina (Ron) Emken, of Grand Island, Tami (Wade) Pierson, of Hartford, Wis., Marcola Parker, of Ogallala, Brandi (Lance) Groseth, of North Platte, Joseph (Vicki) Smith, of Bellevue, David Smith, of Gulf Port, Miss., Pat (Tera) Smith, of Aurora, Vernon (Tracy) Fisher, of South Sioux City, Iowa, Michael Fisher, of Lincoln, Wayne (Sheryl) Fisher, of Lincoln, Jon Fisher, of North Platte, Brian (Kandy) Fisher, of Lincoln, Tory (Gayla) Smith, of North Platte, Kjay (Lisa) Smith, of North Platte, and Landon (Rachel) Boyer, of Minden, Nev.; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie; son, Phillip LeRoy and his wife Virginia Smith; four brothers, Voras, Hampson, Raymond and Leslie Smith; one sister, Mary Wilson; granddaughter, Lisa Smay; and a great-grandson, Quint Scriptner.Memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center.A Christian Wake service will be at 7 p.m. today at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the Rev. James Novakowski as celebrant. Burial will follow at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m., today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of the arrangements. North Platte Telegraph December 6 , 2011
