Interment in Red Butte Cemetery in the Eagles' plot, L. L. Wilkes directing. Phillip R. Crosby was born in New York City October 10, 1854 and was 75 years and 4 days old at the time of his passing. He started west in 1876 locating at Leadville, where he remained until 1880 working in the smelters of that famous camp. Early in 1880 he came to Aspen and was one of the leading prospectors and miners during the early days of the camp. His first act displaying his charitable and helping nature was his gift of the lots upon which the church now stands in which his funeral services were conducted. On May 4, 1890 he was married to Miss Maria E. Steele. This union was blessed by three sons and two daughters. One son, Levi Crosby, passed away in a training camp during the World War, Oct. 18, 1918. The father now lies beside his soldier son. He is survived by a heart-broken widow; two sons, Phil J. and Thomas; two daughters, Mrs. Ed Tiedeman and Mrs. Owen Kearns; one grandchild, Patricia Kearns, all of Aspen; two sisters, Mrs. James Civil and Mrs. Martin Gagnon of New York City; two brothers, James Crosby of New York City, and Thos. Crosby of Senalao, Old Mexico.
