Yesterday morning a telegram announced the death of Levi Crosby at 10:20 o'clock Thursday night. The young solder was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip R. Crosby. On September 3, he left Aspen in company with Bryan Cole, James Dolan, John Nicholson, and Robert Lytle for the training camp at Fort Riley. Young Crosby's last letter home was full of cheerful news and opride that he was a soldier ready to fight for his country. He stated that he had progressed so rapidly as to be made the leader of his squad in the company drill and that meant he was in line to be appointed to the grade of corporal. And now comes the announcement of his death. The deceased soldier is survived by his parents, two sisters, Beebee and Mamie, and two brothers, Phillip, who is now in France, and Tom, who has been placed in Class 1-A of the present draft. This is the second Aspen boy to give up his life in the service of his country and while at the training cantonment, the other being the late Jacob Gerstle. The body of Levi Crosby will be prepared for burial and shipped to Aspen and is expected to arrive here next Monday under a military guard of honor. Cros Crosby was born in Aspen July 13, 1896 and lived his life here until called into the service of his country. He was a member of the 28th Company, 164th Depot Brigade, United States National Army and was stationed at Fort Riley. The death of this young man came as a great shock to the members of the family, the devoted mother being prostrated with grief.
