Her body was given burial last Sunday in the parish cemetery of St. Bonaventura church, in this city, following a service at the church. Mrs. Callahan was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dischner, long since deceased, who were among the early settlers of Bismark township. She was a sister of John F., Joseph E. and Peter Dischner, who still reside in this vicinity. Frank Dischner, another brother, resides at O’Neill. Her husband survives her, but she left no children. She was thirty-seven years old. The incident of her life which brought her into national prominence occurred in the latter 80’s, after which she had grown to young womanhood, and is still considered one of the most remarkable cases known to medical science. Without the slightest premonition of ill health she retired one night, as usual, and for seventy-two consecutive days lay in a sleep so sound that all efforts of friends or physicians failed to arouse her. She was wholly unconscious, insensible to pain, and for many days her body was perfectly rigid. During the long sleep she was kept alive by means of liquid foods, and finally, when she recovered consciousness and her muscles began to relax, her recovery to health and strength covered a period of many months. Dr. C. D. Evans, who was the attending physician, recalls the case distinctly. He says it was only an attack of catalepsy, but so severe that it attracted the attention of physicians and men of science throughout the country. Many of them came from eastern cities to study the case, and eastern newspapers sent special correspondents here to write the story. As a young woman Mrs. Callahan was of very comely appearance, and because of her beauty the case received more than ordinary prominence. Following her recovery to health Mrs. Callahan resided awhile in Denver. Since her marriage, November 28, 1906, she had made her home in Omaha. ____ p. 10, col. 2 & 3 DISTRICT 44 AND VICINITY Mrs. Frank Callahan, of Omaha, died November 10, and funeral services were held at the Columbus Catholic church last Sunday afternoon. Minnie Dischner was born November 22, 1864, and was 47 years, 11 months and 12 days old at the time of death. She will be remembered as Nebraska’s “sleeping beauty.” She had a sick spell some 26 years ago, and slept continuously for seventy days. She leaves a husband and five brothers, three sisters having preceded her to the farther shore. Minnie was of a kind, generous and gentle disposition, and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. It was her wish to be buried in the Columbus cemetery, beside the bodies of her father and mother.
