While a resident of Mendham, Morris Co, NJ he enlisted in the fall of 1775 and served at various times until 1781 in the NJ Militia under Captains Pierson, Daniel Cook, Day, Brown, Robert Gaston, Nathaniel Herton and Colonels Maxwell, Drake, Ford, Seeley, and Starke. He was in the Battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield and served in all about one year". Rebecca Chidester Pitney applied 22 Dec. 1839, age 78, from Mendham, Morris Co., N. J., as the wid. of Phineas Chidester who d. Apr. 1814; she was m. to him 10 Apr. 1780 by Rev. Jones, Army Chaplain. Her husband was a soldier before and after their m., under Capts. Pierson and Day, Cols. Drake and Ford, and Gens, Heard and Wind. Phineas lived all his life in Mendham where they had a family of 4 s. and 6 dau., of whom 8 are living. On 21 Apr. 1828 she was m. to Mahlon Pitney by Rev. Jacob Briant in Randolph Twp., Morris Co., N. J. He d. 1n 1834 and she remains a wid. Israel Bedell, age 70 to 80, disposes that he was a Fifer in Capt. Peter Layton's Co. in 1776 when about 13 or 14 yr. old. When Gen. Washington retreated through N. J., Phineas Chidester was with the Army in Capt. Daniel Cook' Co. He knows that said Chidester served through the Rev. War. Rev. Henry Clark, Meth. minister, age 77, deposes that he was a militia soldier in Capt. Artemus Day's Co., as was Phineas Chidester, and mentions various officers. Knows that he m. Rebecca Byram and that, after his death, Rebecca m. Mahlon Pitney, who d. in 1884. Robert Young, age 87, deposes that he served in the Rev. War with Phineas Chidester, etc. Job Loree, of Mendenham, age 78, and Ephraim Cornes, age 81, similarly depose that they served with Phineas. 1750 - His ear mark was granted in 1750 and assumed by Ebenezer Fairchild in May, 1810. Phineas Chichester and Dan Cook although wounded, remained at the bridge, until transferred to the fort and again wounded. It was at the bridge that Captain John Bell was mortally wounded.
