Mrs. King grew up to be similarly generous, stocking her refrigerator with 15 quarts of milk a week and two 5-gallon containers of ice cream so that visiting children would always have a snack, said Mrs. King's daughter Phoebe Ann Moore. Mrs. King, who died July 13 at age 86, was actively involved in community organizations throughout her life. She was born Jan. 31, 1909, in Halifax, Va., the seventh of nine children. Started college at 16 By the time she was 16, she had advanced so far academically that she was able to enter Randolph Macon Women's College in Virginia. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1929 with a degree in psychology. Before coming to Seattle in the mid-1930s, Mrs. King taught French at a school in Virginia and worked for the Red Cross in New York. During a visit with her brother in Seattle, she became reacquainted with Dr. Robert L. King, a friend from Virginia who was working at Virginia Mason Medical Center. The two were married in 1936, and Mrs. King got a job as a dispatcher for Diesel Oil Sales Co. While raising her six children, Mrs. King volunteered for several organizations, fund-raising for the Girl Scouts and Seattle Junior Programs, and sitting on the board of the Visiting Nurse Association. Loved company But she always had time for visitors and her children's friends. "She was never happy unless the house was full of people," Moore said. "She had a tremendous love of people, and didn't care if children were dirty or got things dirty." Mrs. King's faith formed a strong part of her life, and she worked many hours at the chaplain's office at Virginia Mason. Dave Wendleton, the hospital's chaplain, remembered Mrs. King as "a lady" who was "a lot of fun to be around." Mrs. King and her husband donated funds for a chapel at the hospital. Church volunteer Mrs. King also volunteered for activities sponsored by her church, St. Thomas Episcopal in Medina. In her free time, she excelled at playing bridge and delighted her family with stories of her childhood. Mrs. King is survived by her husband, daughter Phoebe Ann Moore and son-in-law Malcolm Moore, son Robert L. King Jr. and daughter-in-law Helen B. King, son Henry Edmunds (Ted) King and daughter-in-law Deborah King, son John Edmunds King and daughter Margaret King Killien, all of the Seattle area; son George Rangeley King and daughter-in-law Pauline King, of Phoenix; a brother, Robert H. Edmunds, of Greensboro, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Memorials may be sent to the Epiphany Parish Endowment Fund or to Virginia Mason Research Center.
