Pneumonia Lays Claim to Mrs. Phoebe Crawford – Twenty-Five Years in Butte. Mrs. Pheobe Crawford, for over twenty-five years a resident of Chico and Butte county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Boyd, on the Dayton road, at an early hour yesterday morning. Deceased was 73 years of age, and death was due to pneumonia, contracted while she was visiting with her daughter. Mrs. Crawford was born in Ohio in 1834, and moved to Indiana, where she was married to V. Crawford, who preceded her to the grave three years ago. In 1859, Mrs. Crawford crossed the plains to California by ox team, and the trip required six months’ time. With her husband she first located in Plumas county, but removed one year later to San Jose, where six children were born. From San Jose she went East to Michigan, but later returned to California and located in Monterey county. In 1879 she removed to Butte county, where she since resided almost continuously. Surviving here are two daughters and three sons. They are Mrs. J.W. Mills of Marysville, Mrs. J.H. Boyd, J.W., J.L. and C.E. Crawford, all of Chico. Mrs. Crawford was aiding in caring for two of her daughter’s children, who are afflicted with pneumonia, when she became ill with the same ailment. The funeral will be held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Crawford at the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. J.L. Williams of the M.E. Church, South, will officiate. ~~~ 73-year-old Phoebe Crawford was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on December 29, 1907.
