Description	:	Phyllis (Nafts) Ketterling, 82, was born on January 9th, 1939, to Henry & Leah Nafts in Shepherd, MT. She was the seventh of ten children. She passed away surrounded by her loved ones and caring staff of Primrose Gardens Home on March 7th, 2021. Phyllis spent her childhood on the family farm. Read More	Phyllis (Nafts) Ketterling, 82, was born on January 9th, 1939, to Henry & Leah Nafts in Shepherd, MT. She was the seventh of ten children. She passed away surrounded by her loved ones and caring staff of Primrose Gardens Home on March 7th, 2021. Phyllis spent her childhood on the family farm. Though she was one of ten, Phyllis knew how to be a little wild and make herself known. While growing up on the farm in Shepherd, each member of the family was responsible for chores; as such one of her chores was to take the cows up to Scandia school and back. She thought it was a very boring job, so for entertainment she told Bobby Zieske of the “tamest cow” and convinced him to get on it for a ride. Of course, this was not the case and the cow bucked Bobby right into the fence. He threatened to go home and tell his mother, and although she was not scared of his mom, she did fear getting caught by her dad. Phyllis enjoyed skipping school in her younger years and hitch hiking to Billings with her girlfriends. They would hide in the barrow pits as cars were passing by for fear of her dad catching her as he returned home. In addition to hitch hiking, Phyllis caused some ruckus her senior year and was suspended for three days for throwing a firecracker into the principal’s office. She wasn’t worried about the suspension but was more upset about being ratted out! This spiritedness remained with Phyllis throughout her life. During her senior year, another big event happened, she met her future husband and lifelong love, Gene Ketterling. They were introduced by her sister, Delores, and his cousin, Lawrence. After dating throughout her senior year, they were married on July 20th, 1957. They honeymooned in Yellowstone National Park and welcomed their first of three children just shy of their first wedding anniversary. A son, Gary, and two daughters, Sherry and Colleen, became the center of Phyllis’s life as she stayed home to raise them until her youngest’s teenage years. While raising her children, she also kept herself entertained with gardening and pruning her yard and flowers. She would spend hours digging dandelions from her immaculate-appearing yard. This is a hobby she later shared with her son as she helped him with his vegetable garden. She even maintained her home and garden until the end with the help of her family. Phyllis waited many years for grandchildren, but when the grandchildren came, they were her world and apples of her eye. She even opened a daycare in her home so she could be as involved and spend lots of time with them and countless other children. Phyllis spent 25 years caring for kids that came through her door, and especially enjoyed caring for many babies. After she closed the daycare, she kept busy spending hours talking to family and friends on the phone and occasionally accompanying family out for grocery shopping or to go out to eat. She preferred to stay in the comfort of the home she shared with Gene for more than 60 years. Phyllis spent her life becoming the foundation and building a loving family with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She wanted nothing more than to make sure her children and grandchildren were happy. Her heart has missed her husband since his recent passing. She is survived by her two daughters, Sherry (James) Hoban and Colleen (Greg) Silvis; and daughter-in-law Charlise Ketterling. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Tracy Philbin, Dino (Theresa) Bott, Katie (Aaron) Ketterling-Thornburg, Linda Silvis, and Ryan Silvis. She was fortunate to have eight great-grandchildren who also survive her, in addition to her siblings and in laws: Delores Ketterling, Melvin (Arleen) Nafts, Vernie (Alvie) Hager, Ray (Debbie) Nafts, Denise Nafts, and Millard Ketterling, as well as many nieces and nephews. Phyllis joins her loving husband, son, parents, and five of her siblings at rest. A Memorial Service will be held at Heights Family Funeral Home at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, March 10th, 2021, followed by a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Gardens where Phyllis and Gene will be laid to rest together as was their request.
