Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown with Reverend Kent Stillson officiating. Evan Lamb will be the soloist with A.J. Sherrill as organist. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Naples Lutheran Cemetery. Phyllis Elaine Hanson was born July 4, 1930 on a farm near Willow Lake, South Dakota to Raymond and Minnie (Knocke) Warkenthien. She attended a Clark County rural school, graduated from Willow Lake High School and was a graduate of Dakota State College in Madison, South Dakota. She taught elementary education for approximately 30 years in Foxton Township, Naples, Hazel, Henry and Watertown. Cooking, baking and reading were her favorite hobbies. For entertainment Phyllis enjoyed bowling, dancing, watching the Minnesota Twins, visiting and playing cards with her Sunchase friends. She married Norris Hanson on June 30, 1950 in Naples. The couple farmed near Naples until Norris' death June 13, 1981. Phyllis owned and operated Hanson Grocery at Vienna until 1983 when she moved to Watertown and worked in various businesses. In October 1997 she moved to Mesa, Arizona and continued working until 2004. Phyllis moved back to Watertown June 1, 2005. Phyllis is survived by her children, Darla (Carl) Whisenant of Mesa, AZ and Norlyn (Paula) Hanson of Watertown, SD; one brother, Elwood (Barbara) Warkenthien of Willow Lake, SD; sisters-in-law, Marcene Hanson of Naples and Roberta Warkenthien of Willow Lake, SD; one brother-in-law, Clifford Kannegieter of Watertown; four grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Peterson, Angela (Travis) Allen, Jared (Suzanne) Sorrell and Ashlee (Darrin) Norgaard; and four great grandchildren, Madison and Marcus Allen, Dylan Norgaard and Baylee Sorrell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Elver Warkenthien; sisters, Elwanda Moore, Arlys Almont and Marlene Kannegieter; brothers-in-law, Myron Moore, Melvin Hanson, Merl Almont and Ralph Lamb; and sister-in-law, Clarine Lamb.
