Read More	Mangold, Phyllis Margaret Brandau, age 87, of 295 Avenida Sevilla, Laguna Woods, California, died Monday, January 31, 2011 at Shalin Care of Laguna Niguel. Mrs. Mangold was born December 2, 1923 in Rudd, Iowa to Clarence Henry and Arlene Eggers Brandau. She grew up on the family farm, attended Rudd High School, Cornell College, the University of Iowa, and graduated from the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota as a Registered Nurse. She married Lester Henry Mangold of Ryan, Iowa on December 21, 1946 in Iowa City. She worked as a nurse in Dubuque while he attained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in 1949. Following a brief residence in Pasadena, California, they lived in Clinton, Iowa from 1950 to 1978. In Clinton, she was active in numerous social, artistic, musical, church, and civic activities. With her family and closest friends she particularly enjoyed traveling, water skiing, elaborate social events and complex practical jokes. She was a tireless card player, famously so at one point for dealing a perfect hand of bridge. Phyllis worked part-time in Clinton as a shift and private-duty nurse at Jane Lamb Hospital, on the staff of the first Head Start program in Clinton, and as an instructor for Weight Watchers. With their two sons, the Mangolds traveled throughout the United States in a fold-out camper they built themselves, followed by a series of ever-longer and fancier Airstream trailers. In 1978, Lester and Phyllis moved to Leisure World (now Laguna Woods Village) in Orange County, California. They were active with bridge and square dancing while at home, and traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe with the Wally Byam Caravan Club. Phyllis enjoyed vigorous health, though experienced a gradual decline in cognitive function over nearly two decades. To the end of her life, she enjoyed her time, her surroundings, and her companions. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and younger sister. She is survived by her lifelong friend and double cousin, Beverly Brandau of Timonium, Maryland; sister-in-law Harriet Mangold of Manchester, Iowa; sons Lester and Martin and their wives Sally and Jane of Modesto, California and Rockville, Maryland, and grandchildren Alexandra, Katharine, Benjamin, and Barrett. A celebration of life and commital of ashes will be held at Golden Prairie Congregational Church of Ryan, Iowa in the spring. Published in the Orange County Register on February 20, 2011.
