Description	:	Phyllis Berkland, age 94, departed from this life to be with her Lord on January 16, 2020. She was born September 23, 1925, in Brookings County, SD, to her Norwegian parents, Erwin and Agnes (Knutson) Tofte. She grew up on a farm northwest of Brookings, SD, attended Sterling Township country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Volga High School in 1943. She was born September 23, 1925, in Brookings County, SD, to her Norwegian parents, Erwin and Agnes (Knutson) Tofte. She grew up on a farm northwest of Brookings, SD, attended Sterling Township country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Volga High School in 1943. Phyllis attended Nettleton Business College and then worked at the Minnesota State Capitol. On December 7, 1945, she married Orville Berkland upon his arrival home from WWII. They celebrated 57 years of marriage. Phyllis dedicated her life to her family, giving them a wonderful home while they moved to follow Orville’s education and administration career. They lived in Brookings, Geddess, Dell Rapids, and Wessington Springs, SD. In 1961 they moved to the Sioux Falls, SD, area when career changes were made and Orville became the Asst. to the Bishop of the American Lutheran Church of SD for 17 years and then became the administrator of Good Samaritan Luther Manor Nursing Home. Upon Orville’s retirement in 1984 they lived in their lake home near Brainerd, MN, during the summers and wintered in Arizona. In 1990 they moved back to Sioux Falls for the summers and continued to winter in Arizona. Orville passed away on September 24, 2002. Phyllis continued to winter in Arizona until 2015 and then spent the rest of her life in Sioux Falls. Phyllis was a loving, devoted mother of 7 children, grandmother of 16, great-grandmother of 26, and a friend to all who knew her. Remembered for her caring, kindness, selflessness, generosity, and unconditional Christian love. She enjoyed having family and friends over for wonderful meals which often included her pies, orange rolls, molasses bread, pickles, jams and on special occasions, lefsa. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, quilting (making over 100 quilts for her family). She was active in her church, taught Sunday School, was circle chairwoman, was a member of the Board of Education, led Bible studies, and made quilts every Wednesday at church for many years to send to missionaries. She enjoyed life and created so many memorable times with her laughter and warmth. Grateful for sharing her life are four daughters: Linda (Larry) Perkins, Door County, WI, Barbara (Van) Fishback, Brookings, SD, Lori (Ray) Hessefort, Oregon, WI, Lisa (Paul) Kern, Stillwater, MN, and three sons: Doug (Lana), Sioux Falls, SD, Dave (Corky), San Antonio, TX, Tom (Diana), Sioux Falls, SD; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 1:00-3:00, January 25, at First Lutheran Church with funeral to follow at 3:00.
