Hostetler was born in McPherson County, Kansas, on Nov. 26, 1907, the 7th son and the 11th of fourteen children to Salome and Henry Hostetler. He graduated from Harper High School in 1928. Pius was very active in 4-H, earning a scholarship which enabled him to enter Kansas State College in 1930. Pius earned his B. S. degree in Dairy Manufacturing in 1934, after working his way through college while lettering in track and serving as an outstanding member of the dairy and livestock judging teams. He earned his M.S. degree from Iowa State in 1935. Pius married Lois A. Minard, whom he met at Iowa State on June 17, 1936. After teaching for two years, Pius went on to a career in dairy inspection and production management, including several years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and eventually returned to Kansas where he managed Tip Top Dairies for thirteen years. Son Norman was born in Chicago in 1939 and daughter Janice was born in 1947 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lois died in 1968 after a five year battle with breast cancer. Pius retured from the Association of Milk Producers, Inc., in 1972. He married Dora Daiker in 1971, and after they spent a year travelling, he became active with the International Executive Service Corps, spending the next dozen years consulting in at least 17 foreign countries on dairy industry management. After his second retirement in 1983, Pius and Dora moved to Texas and then to Louisiana. Pius continued to travel actively until he broke his hip in 1993, after which he settled down in an assisted living apartment in Opelousas, Louisiana. He remained there until his death on March 14, 1999. All his life, Pius was active in local, state, and national service and professional organizations, receiving many awards and honors, and often serving as president and director. He is survived by son Norman, daughter Janice, grandson Malcolm, granddaughter Nadia Bulkin and great-grandson Thomas, all of Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as brother Amra, Harper, and sister Juanita Ramer, Canby, Oregon, as well as many nieces and nephews.
