Read More	Information below is provided in a family book called Hockenbary Roots Charles Edgar Hockenbary was born 25 Apr 1863 (this date is according to death certificate) near Brimfield, IL. He moved with his family to Hamilton Co. Nebr and on 1 Jan 1884 he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Lytle. To this couple were born 5 children; Carrie Bell born April 21, 1885, Elmer Herbert born September 23, 1887, Minnie May born July 15, 1890, Harry Edgar born August 25, 1895, and Aubrey Berle born October 7, 1897. Charles joined the Army (Spanish American War) 2 May 1898 giving his address as Columbus, Nebr. And his occupation as carpenter. His discharge papers gives his age as 35 years, eyes - blue; hair - black; complexion as dark; height as 5'8". Co. K. 1st Meb. Inf. Discharged 23 Aug 1899 at Presidio, San Francisco, Cal. In the 1912 book "History of the operations of the First Nebraska infantry, U.S.V. in the campaign in the Philippine Islands" (located in the Library of Congress and public domain on the internet) on Page 100 and 101 it Lists Charles Edgar Hockenbary as a member of K Company of the 1st Nebraska Infantry, and a picture of his company (possibly including him) in the Philippines. After leaving the Army he worked for a number of years at the Nebr. State Penitentiary. In 1908 he took a homestead in Tripp Co. SD. He left the farm after 16 years and was granted residence the SD Soldier's Home, Hot Springs, SD. In May of 1925 he being unable to earn a living because of failing eyesight (being completely blind in one eye). His farm sale in Keyepaha was 26 Feb 1924. He divorced his wife of 43 years on 8 Jun 1927. On 8 Dec 1927 he married Katheryn Celeste Mulcahy at Rapid City, SD. Kathryn died 18 Apr 1940. On 31 May 1940 he married Emma Jacox (Beswick-Turley). Charles passed away 6 Sep 1944 at the Vet. Adm. Facility, Hot Springs, SD ward 20 of a duodenal ulcer with gastric hemorrhage. He is buried at the V.A. Facility Springs, SD Sec. 11 Row 4 Grave 15. Article - Gooby Farmers Sell 14 Wagon Loads of Hog to Winner Dealers Entire bunch tops the market. 30 Apr 1916 - An unusually encouraging sight to the optimists of Tripp County was that of the marketing of thirty thousand pounds of hogs at Winner last Friday. These hogs were raised within two miles of Gooby. The hogs were hauled to Winner in Fourteen wagons, requiring thirty-six horses to furnish the motive power. They were sold to Hensleigh & Lankin of this place. Those who sold swine were: Jas. Spaulding, C. Hockenbary, J.F. Mickey, Jesse Costello. The following also assisted in the hauling: R.J. Deft, Clark Gaughenbaugh, Otto Tuntland, Harold Glidden, Lyle Mickey and Walter Braden. This big showing is especially encouraging in view of the fact that buyers at Valentine are making strenuous efforts to secure the trade of that part of the country in which Gooby is located. But as one of those selling, tersely put it, "even though they make us flattering offers at Valentine, Winner is our home town and being assured of a square deal there, Winner dealers will receive our stock." __ According to the Bureau of Land Management - Charles E.
