Highland Recorder February 27, 1914 Charles Pinckney Jones, one of the most prominent and influential citizens of Highland, retired lawyer of the Monterey bar and widely known throughout the Virginias as a public man, breathed his last at 3:30 Sunday morning at his home in this place. Mr. Jones had been in declining health for a number of years, his case assuming serious and alarming form a few months ago, and to his family and immediate friends, death was not unexpected. In the death of Mr. Jones this county has lost one of her most notable and distinguished citizens, one whose life has left an impress on the public affairs both of county and state. He was born at Franklin, W. Va. Sept. 17, 1845, son of John M. and Phoebe J. Jones. Though very young, he entered the Confederate ranks as a private in Company E., 18th Virginia cavalry in 1863 and served until the close of hostilities. Soon after the war he located at Monterey for the practice of his chosen profession, having graduated from the University of Virginia. He was married to Miss Mattie J. Wilson, of Franklin, Jan. 17. 1872. From the time he came to Monterey until 1875 he was the law partner of the late Judge Sieg, and his success and eminence, both at this bar and in neighboring counties, are the strongest evidence of his ample fitness, gifts and qualifications. In the prime of his professional career Mr. Jones was conceded to be the ablest, most forceful and successful attorney of the home bar, and distinguished legal talent of the State, when "crossing swords" with him here and elsewhere, found it in a foeman worthy of their steel. While his almost unerring judgment and gifts as a speaker gave him prominence as a criminal lawyer, it was along other lines of practice that he probably gained greatest distinction. It is a known that the late Judge Wm. McLaughlin, one of the State's judicial bright-lights, classed him as the best chancery lawyer in his district, and his concise and faultless style in such procedure was the admiration and envy of not a few contemporary attorneys. To a man of his fervor of mind in energy of address there is always a call to the field of politics, public life is naturally inviting and he entered upon that phase of service in 1883-1884, when he was elected a member of the House of Delegates from the counties of Highland and Bath, later serving two terms in the State Senate. In 1898 he was appointed a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, and at the first meeting of the new Board was chosen Rector, an honor which he fully appreciated, successfully meeting the weighty responsibilities, his tenure of office being characterized throughout by dignity and sagacity. On retiring from the rectorate in 1906, he was presented a loving cup by the President and faculty of the University, bearing the following inscription: "Charles Pinckney Jones Member of the Board of Visitors and Rector of the University of Virginia 1898-1906. The gift of the President and members of the Faculty in grateful recognition of unselfish and unstinted service to his Alma Mater and to the State." For many years Mr. Jones had not been in robust health, during which time his work was necessarily interrupted, and at times, altogether cut off from the bar. When the Citizen Bank of Highland was organized six years go he was made its president* which position he held until his death. As a churchman he will be missed. He made a profession of faith at a meeting held here by evangelist Howard about twenty years ago and united with the Methodist Church South, being senior member of the Board of Stewards at the tune of his death. In the support of the ministry and all benevolent work he was ever ready and liberal, and it was largely through his generosity that the present handsome house of worship was made possible. In Sabbath school work he was faithful and efficient , his knowledge of the bible and his familiarity with ancient and modem history specially fitting him for such service, and for probably 35 years he had been teacher of the ladies bible class. But, with Mr. Jones as with many other men, it was perhaps in the home life where he was seen at his best, for he was a most considerate and affectionate father, a faithful and tender husband. His illness was of long duration trying and distressing . Those of immediate family surviving him are his wife, four sons - Charles P. Jones, Jr. of Covington, Edwin B. and Richard C. Jones of Monterey and Thomas Jones of Los Angeles, Cal. ; five daughters - Mrs. Phoebe Wilson, Misses Maggie, Mable H., Martha V. and Mary E. Jones all of Monterey. Dr. Olin Jones, of Harrisonburg is his only living brother, and the surviving sisters are Mrs. A. R. Smith, of Academy, W. Va. , Mrs. I. C. Johnson and Miss Sallie D. Jones, of Franklin. The list named was present during the closing weeks of his illness and at the time of his death The funeral took place from the Methodist church Monday at 3 o'clock, touching and appropriate services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. L. L. Lowance, assisted by Rev. N. A. Parker, of the Presbyterian church. The day proved to be one of the most inclement of the winter, yet a large number of relatives and friends from every section of the county were present, an evidence of the high esteem in which he was held.
