Mr. Pyle was born in Kentucky, February 8, 1817, and when one year old his parents moved to Perry county, Ill. February 8, 1842, he was married at Pinkneyville, Ill., to Catherine Ann Combs, who is still living and mourns the loss of a devoted husband. Nine children were born to them: Socratus, Augustus, John, Abner, Mary E., Deborah, Ellen, Harley and Carrie, seven of whom are living, Socratus and Ellen being dead, the first in 1862 and the latter in 1892. In 1855 Mr. Pyle and family moved to Worth county, Mo., where they lived till January 1881, when they came to this county and have lived in it ever since. Mr. Pyle belonged to the State Militia in Missouri for four years, and was a member of the John R. Andrews Post G.A.R. of Lamoni, and the pall bearers were from the members of the Post. Mr. Pyle leaves a wife and seven children and a host of sympathizing friends. He was much respected by all who knew him, was quite well read and very entertaining in conversation. He was not a member of any church but was a man of good principles and morals, and one who always attended to his own business, and of whom no ill was ever spoken to the knowledge of the writer during his acquaintance of 15 years. For three months Mr. Pyle has been under the care of his daughter, Mrs. John Keown. Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, December 3, 1896 The long and eventful life of MR. CORTEZ PYLE, came to a peaceful close at his home in Lamoni last Tuesday. He had reached the ripe age of 79 years, 10 months and 10 days, having been born in Kentucky, February 14, 1817. He removed with his parents from Kentucky to Perry County, Illinois, when but a year old. He remained there until 1855, when he removed to Worth County, Missouri, where he remained until his removal to Lamoni in 1881, where he has resided ever since. He was in the State Militia of Missouri from 1861 to 1865, and was at the time of death a charter member of the Grand Army. Deceased was married to MISS CATHARINE M. COMBS, in Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois, February 8, 1842. To him and his companion, who still survives him, 9 children were born, 5 boys and 4 girls, two of whom preceded him into the Great Beyond, one boy and one girl, and 7 remain to mourn his death. Of the living, one son is at Grant City, one south of Mt. Ayr, and one, a blind son, in the Soldiers' Home at Leavenworth, Kansas. One daughter here, one at Redding, Iowa, and one at Kansas City. MR. PYLE was not a member of any church, but was an excellent neighbor, a warm friend, and a faithful citizen. His home was a home for everybody, and especially for Ministers of the Gospel. He was a hard-working man, but was well read, being conversant with English Classics, both poetry and prose. The funeral took place from the L.D.S. Church yesterday at two p.m., Elder H.A. Stebbins preaching the sermon. The remains were laid to rest at Rose Hill. --Lamoni Patriot. PYLE. At Lamoni, Iowa, November 24, 1896, of dropsy, Mr. Cortez Pyle, aged 79 years, 9 months, and 10 days. He was born in Kentucky. In 1818 his parents removed to Perry County, Illinois, where he grew to manhood and was married in 1842. In 1855 they removed to Worth County, Missouri, and thence to Lamoni in 1881. He lived an honorable life but never united with any religious body. His wife became a member of the Reorganized Church of Christ in 1870, and he had great respect for it but held that a proper life of morality and honesty was all the preparation needful for the future. After nearly fifty-five years of companionship with him his wife is left to mourn. Of nine sons and daughters born to them seven remain. The funeral sermon was preached by Elder H.A. Stebbins, assisted by Elder A.S. Cochran. Private CO H 31st Regt, Missouri Militia Capt. Mason's Regiment Mustered In: Aug 11, 1862, Worth County, Missouri by Brig. Gen. Loan. Mustered Out: Sep 13, 1862 by Brig. Gen. Hall. Father of nine.
