Description	:	Don Alzaro Skellenger (He also used the names Don A, D A and Albert) was the son of Sylvester and Mary Ann Cogswell Skellenger of Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York. Read More	Don Alzaro Skellenger (He also used the names Don A, D A and Albert) was the son of Sylvester and Mary Ann Cogswell Skellenger of Sandy Creek, Oswego County, New York. While living in Watertown, NY, Don Alzaro was a prominent member of the local fire department as part of engine No. 8. A miller by trade, in 1858, at the age of 23, Don Alzaro left his NY home and began his journey westward, first to New York City and then on to Minneapolis, Minnesota, working as a miller. He eventually removed to Wisconsin where he enlisted in the Union Army on 23 Sep 1862 at Lacrosse. He was assigned the rank of Private and attached to Co D, 18th Wisconsin Infantry. He remained with this unit until he was discharged on 21 May 1865 in Washington, D. C. His military unit served under General William T Sherman and he participated in 13 major battles and was part of the march from Atlanta to the sea. Following the end of the Civil War, Don Alzaro removed to Ohio where he married Sophia R Charter, daughter of James M and Sophia Charter, on 23 Oct 1871, in Ashtabula. They then removed to Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH, before ultimately going "out west" to California ca 1875, where, in 1880, their family was living in Mendocino, Sonoma Co. Don Alzaro and Sophia had three children: Frederick Charter (1872-1930), Harry Don (1874-1940) and Mary Dean (1877-1961). All three children remained in CA, married and raised their families there; their descendants survive today. The marriage of Don Alzaro and Sophia ended sometime before the year 1895, and, suffering from poor health, he was admitted to the Veterans Home of California at Yountville, CA, that year. Don Alzaro remained at the Home until his death. However, he was known to have inherited a considerable sum of money from a maternal uncle, Dr Henry D Cogswell (1820-1900) of San Francisco, CA, and was thereby able to enjoy a comfortable life which included at least one trip back to Watertown, NY, in 1902. Don Alzaro lies near his son, Harry Don Skellenger, in the Veterans Memorial Grove Cemetery, on the grounds of the Veterans Home of California at Yountville. Don Alzaro and Harry Don Skellenger were, respectively, the 7th and 8th generation descendants of Jacobus Schellinger (1625-1693) of Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland; Jacobus is generally recognized as the Dutch immigrant who first brought his surname to the New World circa 1650.
