Description	:	SON OF COLEMAN & KATE FERNEY CASTLIO Barrett, as he was called by the family was a cheerful young man who was a great favorite of his sisters. He enlisted in the Army in World War I, but died in a tragic accident during an expostion of the troops in Los Angeles. He was riding "roman" which is riding while standing with one foot on the back of two horses. There was someone else doing the same thing and at first thay all rode in the same direction. Then the general ordered them to ride in opposite directions. The horses tangled and both young men were thrown to their deaths. Barrett's mother and sisters were in the audience. His death was a profound tragedy for the family. Even 60 years later, his sisters cried when talking about it. ∼Los Angeles Times - June 5, 1918: SOLEMN SERVICE FOR DEAD KEARNY SOLDIER Bugle Plays "Taps" and Guns Roar Salute as Man is Buried Funeral services for Private Hallam B. Castillo, member of the One Hundred and Forty-third Field Artillery, who was fatally injured last Saturday morning at Exposition Park, were held yesterday afternoon at the Bresee Bros.' chapel. As the six pallbearers, Privates Stevens, Gaffney, Findlayson, Rector, Williams and Lester placed the casket containing the remains of their former comrade on a gun caisson hundreds of people lining Figueroa street at Ninth uncovered as the strains of "Nearer My God, To Thee," played by the First Regimental Band hushed the roar of streetcars and passing autos. The military funeral sermon was preached by Regimental Chaplain Fred Thompson, after which the funeral cortege, consisting of members of Battery F, one mounted and one unmounted section and many autos containing the friends of the dead soldier, proceeded to Rosedale Cemetery, where the last military rites were given, the blowing of "taps" and three salvos from a field piece. After camping at Universal Ranch the regiment will again proceed on their long hike back to the national cantonment at Linda Vista on Thursday, pursuant to orders received from Maj.-Gen. Strong yesterday.
