Description	:	Enlisted Nov.16, 1861 as a 24 yr. old recruit into Co. H, 5th Iowa Infantry. Sworn into U.S. service by Captain Smith, 13th (11th) U.S. Infantry on Nov.26, 1861 at Syracuse, Mo. on Co. return dated Dec.31, 1861. Died of chronic diarrhea March 30, 1862 in regimental hospital at New Madrid, Mo. Effects were of no value. Last paid to Dec.30, 1861 and had drawn clothing in the amount of $18.67 since last settlement. J.A. Woodson, also of Co. Drake who died in the hospital" and under March 31,1862 date, "This morning we buried Harvey Drake at 10 A.M. by the side of the road under an oak. The whole company was out". His remains would have been moved after the war probably to the National Cemetery at Memphis, Tn. and buried as an unknown U.S. soldier. However, Iowa Cemetery Records list a Harvey L. Drake, age 25, died on March 30,1862, and a C.W.V. Co. H, 5th Iowa Inf. as being buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Douds, Van Buren Co., Iowa. Since Harvey's father, David, is buried here it is possible his remains were returned to Iowa for burial. Further research is necessary to determine his exact burial location.
