Death Claims Both - Death has this week twice entered a St. Paul home and removed therefrom its only inmates, an old soldier and his faithful wife. At 7 o'clock Monday evening Mrs. H. W. Nichols succumbed to a prolonged attack of illness and the spirit of her aged husband followed at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. Both have been suffering from la grippe for several weeks, which together with their extreme age and other infirmities made recovery impossible. The funeral was held from the late residence in the northern part of town at 2 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon, Rev. J. P. Yost officiating. Both bodies were buried in one grave in the city cemetery. [Lucinda's obit followed] Henry W. Nichols was a native of Madison county, New York and and was 76 years and 24 days old when he died. After his marriage he removed to Clarksville, N. Y., where he made his home until 1867. In the meantime he served two years and nine months in the war of the rebellion, being a member of the One Hundred and Thirty-Sixth New York volunteers. His war record was that of a brave and unflinching soldier. He sustained injuries in the line of duty which permanently disabled him and no doubt hastened his death. After the war the family removed to Kendall county, Illinois, and in 1881, they came to St. Paul, where Mr. and Mrs. Nichols have since made their home. For a number of years they lived on the Starkweather farm west of town now owed by William Reilly. They bought property near the brickyard about 1895, where they have lived ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Nichols were a very estimable couple. "Uncle Henry [Harry? not clear]" as he was familiarly called, was the embodiment of honor. Although his last days were spent in poverty, he never failed to meet his obligations and never uttered a complaint of neglect from the government in whose service his health was sacrificed. Assurances had recently been received that his meager pension would soon be raised to a comfortable figure, but his needs were first relieved by death. The manner in which these old people died is very pathetic, and yet it seems merciful, for either would have been unhappy without the other after a lifetime of companionship.
