Friday evening, May 24th. Of peculiar sadness is the fact that he lingered only a very brief time in a semi-conscious state, after being struck by a heavy limb from a tree he was felling for a firm of A.M. Given, near McDowell. He was rushed to Kings Daughters Hospital, Staunton, where it was found he had suffered a fatal skull fracture, dying shortly after reaching there James (Jim) Jones, son of the late Thomas J. Jones and Susan Jones, was born in Monterey, May 26, 1896 and reared here, moving to McDowell in early manhood. He was of a retiring nature, kind, courteous and thoughtful in his daily walk of life. When a lad he had frequently worked for this office and we had always found him dependable and painstaking. Surviving beside his wife, who was formerly a Miss Irvine of McDowell, and one child; mother, Mrs. Susan Jones, Doe Hill; one sister, Mrs Arthur Simmons, Mustoe; four brothers, Tom of Bluefield, W.Va.; Billy of Pennsylvania; Ed, Doe Hill. (4TH ?). The impressive rites of the Methodist church were read by Dr. R.B. Proctor, assisted by Rev. L.M Moffett, in the McDowell Methodist Church, Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial took place at McDowell cemetery, and was attended by a large gathering of friends. B.H. Colaw and family attended the funeral and burial of Jim Jones at McDowell Sunday. DOE HILL NEWS: The body of Jimmy Lee Jones was brought here to the home of his mother, Mrs. Susan Jones, Saturday. Mr. Jones died in the Kings Daughters Hospital. Highland Recorder November 12, 1912 Jim Jones, aged perhaps 16, son of Thomas J. Jones, has been in a critical condition for more than a week at his home near Monterey. He was suddenly stricken while standing on a neighbor's porch and the physician summoned diagnosed his case as heart trouble due to excessive cigarette smoking. Jim, like many other boys, did not know he was injuring his health and has been smoking ever since he could strike a match. This fact is cited for two reasons, that other boys may take warning, and that parents and guardians may profit by this warning. There are many boys in Monterey smoking now and many arc quite young. Highland Recorder March 30, 1923 James Jones of Monterey and Miss Hazel Ervine of McDowell motored to Cumberland Md., last Thursday and were married. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Web Ervine and the groom is the son of Mrs. Susan and the late T. J. Jones.
