Description	:	Highland Recorder February 2, 1940 Doe Hill News: John Luther Jones died at Fortress Monroe, Sunday morning January 28th at 12:30 o’clock. He was approximately 45 years of age. He was a World War veteran and had been in the CCC camp at Camp Lee for sometime. Mr. Jones was born and reared at Monterey, then moved to this community following the war and made his home with his mother until her death. Read More	Highland Recorder February 2, 1940 Doe Hill News: John Luther Jones died at Fortress Monroe, Sunday morning January 28th at 12:30 o’clock. He was approximately 45 years of age. He was a World War veteran and had been in the CCC camp at Camp Lee for sometime. Mr. Jones was born and reared at Monterey, then moved to this community following the war and made his home with his mother until her death. Surviving are three brothers, Thomas of Bluefield, W.Va.; Robert K. and Ed of McDowell; one sister, Mrs. Arthur Simmons of Vanderpool; two daughters, Francis of Roanoke and Mrs. Harry Fleming of Pennsylvania. One grandchild survives. While funeral arrangements have not completed it is understood that burial will be in the McKendree cemetery. Highland Recorder February 9, 1940 The funeral of John L. Jones was held from McKendree church Friday, February 2, at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. W P. Saunders. Hymns used were “How Firm a Foundation”, “I Will Sing You a Song” and “Home of the Soul”. Burial was n McKendree cemetery. Highland Recorder August 9, 1918 "SHORTY" JONES GETS TO CAMP WITH STRAPPING DESERTER (Special Dispatch from Camp Lee) Camp Lee, Va., August 6 When Private John L. Jones, better known as "Shorty", who is detailed to the Red Cross at Camp Lee as chauffeur, returned a few days ago from a five days furlough, he brought with him a strapping big deserter as a memento of his trip. Shorty in no way belies his name as far as stature is concerned, for he does not measure over five feet, but, let it be remarked every foot is all man. Shorty had been to his home at Monterey. Va., had seen all his old friends, had partaken of the fatted calf along with other lucious viands, and, mindful of the fact that his time was almost up, had started bank to camp. A short way out from Staunton he spied a familiar figure, that of a recruit recently received at camp with whom Shorty was acquainted, "Where are you going?" asked Shorty. "Home," said the deserter. "You and I are going back to camp together," was Shorty's laconically significant answer. And Shorty was right.
