Wagaman, 36, who was home from Fort Bliss, Texas on a 15 day furlough, was killed at 12:45 this Thursday morning when the light Chevrolet truck he was driving turned over a mile south of Tenville Junction on highway No. 71. Wagaman, 36, who was home from Fort Bliss, Texas on a 15 day furlough, was killed at 12:45 this Thursday morning when the light Chevrolet truck he was driving turned over a mile south of Tenville Junction on highway No. 71. Pvt. Wagaman, who was accompanied by his wife, was pinned under the truck. He suffered a fracture of the back of the head. He was crushed through the middle of the body and his right ankle was broken. Mrs. Wagaman's collar bone was broken. ON WAY TO PINES Pvt. and Mrs. Wagaman were on their way to the Pines at Tenville when a car passed them on the highway and Pvt. Wagaman endeavored to go round the car which had just driven by him. In his attempt, he lost control of the truck which is owned by the Southwest Distributing Co. and he left the pavement, turning over several times into the ditch at the east side of the highway. Mrs. Wagaman managed to crawl from the wrecked truck and stop a passing car, the driver of which reported the accident at Tenville. Coroner, Ray Sutphens was called and after communicating with Sheriff Zeph Morgan in Red Oak and with Mrs. Wagaman, he went to the scene of the accident and recovered the body, bringing it to the Sutphen funeral home. Mrs. Wagaman was brought to Villisca by a passing car before her husband's body was removed from the wreck and was taken to the Dr. J. Clark Cooper hospital rooms where she received medical attention. She was then taken to her home on North Fifth Avenue. TRUCK WRECKED The left front wheel of the pickup was broken off, radiator, hood, and left front fender smashed and the truck bed wrecked. It was brought this morning to the Vic's Chevrolet Co. garage. Pvt. Wagaman arrived home Friday from Fort Bliss on a 15 day furlough and was to have reported back there for duty August 9. Besides his wife, he leaves 5 children. No funeral arrangements have yet been made. Pvt. Wagaman was employed as truck driver for the Southwest Distributing Co. prior to his recent induction into the army. Information found in The Villisca Review, Thursday, August 3, 1944. HOLD LAST RITES FOR JAS. M. WAGAMAN, KILLED IN CAR WRECK Funeral services for Pvt. James M. Wagaman, who was killed Thursday morning of last week in an automobile accident, were held Sunday at 2:30 P.M. in the Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. W. S. Bowden. Singing was by Mrs. Frances Gray, accompanied by Mrs. Frances Wheeler, and the pall bearers were Floyd Kirby, Vern Kuhn, Walter Kendrick, J. T. Dawson, Cass Kendall, and Joe Hinkle, and interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. The members of the American Legion post of Villisca attended in a body and a firing squad of eight men and two buglers from the prisoner of war camp at Clarinda were here to take part in the service. Members of the local legion served as the color guard. James Mitchell Wagaman, son of Harvey and Sarah Wagaman, was born January 5, 1907, near Luther Oklahoma, and was 37 years old at the time of his death. In January 1917, he came to this part of Iowa with his parents, and the family engaged in farming. He was married October 26, 1930, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Frances Hutchingson and his married life was spent in Villisca. He was working for the Southwest Distributing Company as a truck driver at the time of his induction into the armed forces. Pvt. Wagaman was home from Fort Bliss, Texas on a 15 day furlough when he was killed. He is survived by his wife and five children, Charles Mitchell, age 13, Glen Francis (Jimmie), 10, Joan, 8, Philip Dean, 7, and Connie Ruth, 2. Pvt. Wagaman's parents are both living, his father residing at Lincoln, Missouri, and his mother staying with a son in Anthony, Kansas. One sister, Mrs. Myrtle Royer died in October, 1903. He is survived by three brothers and one sister. Erwin W. Wagaman, Anthony, Kansas, Orville L., Omaha, Nebraska, Floyd Clifford, Takoma, Washington, and Mrs. Lulu Wilkle, Iowa.
