| Description | : | John Henry Young, a son of Samuel Tatum Young and the former Miss Sallie Janeta Creswell, was born on August 24th 1893 in the bounds of Indian Hill in Abbeville County, South Carolina. In January 1918, John enlisted in Co. L. 56th Pioneer Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces at Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina. The Pioneers unit, usually march at the head of each battalion to clear a passage for it through woods or other obstructions, improve roads, make bridges and generally do any minor engineering or construction work that may be necessary.
