Mr. Varney was 89 years and 2 months old, and just old age was given as the underlying cause of death. Mr. Varney was a well-known and beloved resident of this section for many years, and was one of the last Civil War veterans in the valley. Funeral services were held this Thursday, 2:30 pm at the Lakeside church, with Rev. J. A. Longston officiating. The music was furnished by the Lakeside church choir. John Parker Varney was born at Angola, New York, March 24, 1842. He moved with his parents to Michigan, where they lived for a year or so, from there they moved to Springdale, Iowa. On Mar. 12, 1864 he enlisted in Co. G 47th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out Sept. 28th 1864 at expiration of service at Davenport, Iowa. On December 30, 1865, he married Hanna Jane Heacock of West Branch, Iowa. To this union twelve children were born, eight boys and four girls of whom five boys and three girls are still living. LeRoy S. Varney of Wilmington, Ca., Cora C. Varney of Honolulu, Anna Davis of Ottumwa, Iowa, Will and Clyde Varney of Trinidad, Wa., and Laonda and Horace Varney of Chelan. Besides his own children there are 34 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, two sister, Mrs. Anna Phelps of Seattle,Wa., and Mrs. Mary Lloyd of Spirit Lake, Iowa, survive him. He died at Lakeside, Wa., May 26, 1931 at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 2 days. -------------------------- 11 June 1931 - West Branch Times Chelan, Wash., May 28.--Funeral services for J. P. Varney, 89 year old veteran of the Civil War, who died at his home in Lakeside Monday morning, were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Lakeside church. Varney had been a resident of this community for the past 12 years and is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. J. P. Varney was born March 24, 1842, at Angola, New York, later moving to Springdale, Iowa, where in 1865 he was married to Miss Hanna Heacock of West Branch, Iowa. They continued to live in Iowa and Nebraska for several years, finally moving to Chelan in 1919. Varney is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Phelps of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Mary Lloyd of Spirit Lake, Idaho. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Varney of which the following survive: Mrs. Clara Johns . . . Varney of Trinidad, Leroy S. Varney of Wilmington, Calif., Cora T. Varney of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mrs. Anna Davis of Ottumwa, Iowa, Leonna and Harry Varney of Chelan.
