McKellar Sadie McKellar - Luther Edmonds ************* ************* John Robert McKellar was born and raised in Greenwood County, South Carolina to John M. McKellar of Scotland and Elizabeth Douglas of Greenwood. His family must have instilled good values in him and taught him the virtues of honesty and hard work, because the last census taken shortly before the War showed him in the position of overseer on his father's property at the tender age of 21. Quite a responsible, demanding job at the time for one so young, and showed great trust placed in John by his father. In 1861, along with his younger brother George and older brother William, John also enlisted for duty in the Confederacy. His Civil War papers in the National Archives show he mustered in as Private in Co F, 2nd Regiment South Carolina Volunteers on April 17 by W.W. Perryman in Greenwood, and was in Richmond VA by May 23 1861 reporting for duty. Not much paperwork remains on his War service other than a muster roll dated April 29 to July 1 1861, then another document from Jan 3 1863. The last document indicates he was in Camp Camden for the sick and wounded, and was discharged from service due to rheumatism. By 1870 he was back home in Greenwood and married. His wife was the former Miss Martha E. "Mattie" Miller, also from South Carolina. They married around 1865. John went back to farming to support his new family and the first of their nine children, Beulah, arrived 1866. Three sons followed, then three more daughters, then a son and another daughter. In September of 1900, John lost Mattie. He eventually went to live with his son John Miller McKellar and his wife Fannie towards the end of his life, and was reunited once again with Mattie in 1913 when he, too, died.
