Eastwood, veteran of the Civil War and one of the most respected citizens of Eureka and Greenwood County, died at his home corner of Fourth and Elm Streets at 3:45 o'clock Monday morning, January 13, 1908, of stomach trouble, aged 62 years, nine months and 25 days. John S. Eastwood was born in Wabash County, Illinois, March 18, 1845. Here he spent his boyhood and here was the beginning of that manhood which was to him the love and respect of his fellow-men. On February 1, 1864 he enlisted in the 40th regiment of Illinois Infantry and served faithfully and honorably until July 21, 1864 when he was wounded in the left knee at the battle before Atlanta. The leg was amputated on the field and he was sent north to a hospital where he was honorably discharged June 27, 1865. On September 8, 1872 in Wabash County, Illinois he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Mitchell. The this union seven children were born five of whom are living. Those are Mrs. William Russell of Ulysses, Kansas; Mrs. John Hoschestrasser and G.W. Eastwood of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Burrel Parks and Miss Ethel Eastwood of Eureka. The family came to Kansas and Greenwood County in 1872. Mr. Eastwood was a charter member of Dick Yates Post 50 and also a member of the I.O.O.F. and K. of P. Lodges. He had always taken an active part in the affairs of the county and served the county two terms as Register of Deeds. He was also Postmaster at Eureka under President Harrison's administration. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and also one of the trustees. He was full of kind deeds and devotion to his services for the loved ones. He was imbued with the spirit of righteousness equalled only by his abborrence of anything wrong and he called every man friend, no man emeny. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. I.C. Paugh, were held from the Methodist Episcopal Church, Wednesday afternoon January 15, 1908 at 2 o'clock. Dick Yates Post No. 50 and I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 52 also held ritual service. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery. It is the men of this type who have made this a great country and their loss is always keenly felt.
