Description	:	Joseph was a son of Andrew Tegarden (1802-1872) and Miranda Brooks Finley (1803-1848). He had the following siblings: Polly A. (b. 1835), Sarah (b. 1838), Amanda (b. 1840), and Preston (b. 1843). Joseph married Miss Millie Wallace (b. 1842) on Sept 23, 1856. Together they had children w/Millie: Rosanna (1860-1909), Margaret A. (1862-1920). Joseph remarried on April 4, 1869 to Miss America J. Worrell (1841-1882); children w/ America: Amelia B. A, 38th Indiana Infantry on Sept. 17, 1861. He was captured at the Battle of Perryville, KY on Oct. 8, 1862 and was paroled by his Confederate captors shortly afterwards. He spent time in prisoner exchange camp in Indianapolis before returning to the regiment. He mustered out after three years of service on Sept. 17, 1864. During the regiment's "veteran furlough" when all the original 1861 soldiers who reenlisted in Dec. 1863 were awarded a 30-day furlough home as a unit, he was temporarily assigned to Co. G, 82nd Indiana Infantry during that time. Tegarden was a post-war farmer and a member of Indiana G.A.R. Post #252 (Spicely Post) in Orleans, Orange Co., IN. He applied for a veteran's invalid pension on Sept. 14, 1877 (app. #241,959; cert. #168,942).
