American Legion Post 42 in Mason City, Nebraska is known as "Mason City American Legion Paul Coffman Post 42". "One of the grandest memorial services ever held in Mason City was held at the Baptist Church, Sunday (13 October 1918), for Paul Coffman, who died in the line of duty in France, September 8, 1918. The Mason City Lodge, Number 207 I.O.O.F., of which the deceased was a member, showed their respects in a most commendable manner and attended the services in a large body. Many of the members of the Litchfield and Broken Bow lodge were present. The procession formed at Oddfellows hall and the large body of members marched to the Baptist Church where the services were held. Rev. Paul A. Schenk, officiating. The lodge members carried their large Service Flag which bore a golden star in honor and memory of their beloved and deceased brother. Paul Coffman was born near Mason City, on the home farm, September 12, 1886 and lived here all of his life except for a year spent at Grand Island where he attended college. He had been in the service of Uncle Sam since April, 1918, going from Custer County to Camp Funston where he remained until the latter part of May when he sailed for France with the 89th Division. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widowed mother, Mrs. Beatrice Coffman, of this city; one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Kelley of Fowler, Colorado; and one brother, H.H. Coffman, also of this city, and many other relatives and a host of friends."
