Obituary Sudden Death of Sam'l Leu Samuel Leu, dropped dead on his way from the field to the house on his son's farm north of town Friday. He had been out shocking some wheat and told Mr. Hatfield who was cutting that he would go to the house. At noon when his son, Ernest, who had been in another field plowing corn, came to dinner his wife asked where, "Grandpa" was. The dinner bell was rung and Ernest started for the field, but when about half way he found his father lying by the pathway, dead. Samuel Leu was born in Grasswil, Commune Seeberg, Canton Berne, Switzerland, May 27, 1829. He came to this country in 1862 and immediately enlisted in Company A of the 17th Illinois Calvary. After the war he returned to Switzerland, but in 1880 he came back and to this part of Kansas which he has called home, though he has made several trips back and forth since that time. On May 29th, 1871 he was married to Maria Miller of Nashville, Illinois, to which two children were born; the wife and daughter having proceeded him to the home of the saints above. On the 5th day of November 1882 Mr. Leu was again married to Margaret Saaler to which one daughter was born. Mr. Leu was converted to God in youth and joined the Presbyterian church. In later years he united with the Evangelical Association at Coal Creek, Kansas, of which he remained a faithful Christian member to the day of his death. He was a daily student of God's word which he loved and prized above any other literature. His faithful Christian life abides as the best witness to his readiness for the death of the righteous. The funeral was held Sunday at the German church on Coal Creek, the sermon being preached by Rev. Kipplinger and the body laid to rest in the Coal Creek cemetery.
