His parents were pioneers of Bond County, Illinois, and his father was known in his early years as a "hard-time Whig," but later became a Republican. They had ten children and spent their last days in Logan County, Illinois. "In 1862 Thomas enlisted in the 108th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the shoulder and carried this bullet throughout his life. He was also wounded in the neck, but returned to fight with his regiment until the fall of 1862. A year after his return from the war, he married Margaret Davidson May, a Civil War widow, on September 5, 1865. Margaret was born in Preble County, Ohio, one of six children of John W. Davidson and Nancy Ann Beatly. John died in Audubon in 1903. "Thomas and Margaret lived on a farm in Logan County, Illinois, where he was in charge of machinery for many years. In 1885 they moved to Audubon County and bought 80 acres in Leroy Township, 3 miles northeast of Audubon. They had five children: Josie, who married Charles Trumell and lived near Spencer, Iowa; Martha Jane, who died as a small child; John William, a farmer of Madison County, Iowa; James Reuben; and George Harvey, who bought their farm in 1905, when they moved to West Audubon and built a home at 321 Pacific. Thomas then managed the electric light plant for many years. He died in 1920." (Author unknown). -------------------------
