Five companies were from Madison, Stokes, Randolph, Surry, and Forsyth counties, one from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and two from Pike and Meriwether counties, Georgia. The Virginia company was transferred in September, 1862, and the Georgia commands in mid-1863. It was sent to the coast and captured in the Battle of Roanoke Island. After being exchanged it was assigned to General Daniel's and Grimes' Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It served from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, fought in the Shenandoah Valley with Early, and was active around Appomattox. It lost 3 killed and 5 wounded at Roanoke Island and of the 240 engaged at Gettysburg, sixty-four percent were disabled. The battalion surrendered with 3 officers and 49 men. The field officers were Lieutenant Colonels Hezekiah L. Andrews, Wharton J. Green, and Charles E. Shober; and Majors Marcus Erwin, John M. Hancock, and James J. Iredell. William fought in the same Battalion as Enoch Corder and Lee Wood. They all married cousins. William, Jr. enlisted 8 September 1861 to serve twelve months in Company "B", Second Battalion, North Carolina Troops. He was 48 at the time. The records are not clear, but his last entry is for 30 June 1862. He may have been discharged because of his age. His "homestead" is filed in Surry Deed Book 12:75. His is the only legibly marked grave in the Stanley Family Cemetery, Stony Knoll. At the death of his wife, their small farm was divided between heirs, which gives us the framework of the first three generations of the Stanley Family in Surry County, North Carolina. The 1870 census lists them with one child, Milton (Caesar) Bowles. This is a child bound out to William and Sally. Milton was a mulatto, a person with an African mother and an European father, or "half black and half white." Bound Children: One of the most striking characteristics of early American labor markets was the extensive use of bound labor. A largely unexplored type of bound labor involved children whose parents were deceased or were unable or unwilling to raise them. The process of arranging for care of these children as orphan apprenticeship since the children were often called orphans even if one parent survived. Before the development of orphanages during the middle of the nineteenth century, abandoned children became the responsibility of the local government, which typically sought to place the child with a master or mistress who would care for him or her. The exchange of child labor for cash or in-kind payments among the officials charged with finding a new home for the child, the master, and the child was a complex arrangement. As in other settings for the hire of bound labor, the child's expected productivity influenced terms of the indenture contract. Thus, similar economic considerations may have influenced many different kinds of bound labor arrangements.
