Rachel Ann Buffington 1822-1910 Rachel Ann Buffington was born in Dearborn County, IN, May 5, 1822 and died at her home near Dover, August 19, 1910, age 88 years, 3 months and 13 days. She was a granddaughter of David Buffington who owned the Buffington Island in the Ohio River below Wheeling, WV. She grew to womanhood in IN and in Feb. 1843, she came across the ice on the river at Fort Madison (IA) with a family named Johnson. She found employment as a seamstress in the family of P.B. Marcy and later with Calvin Bonnel's family, where she met James H. Bonnel whom she married March 5, 1845. Her husband, with four other brothers, sold their store there and moved to a farm of 880 acres one mile north of where the Dover postoffice was ten years later established, and upon a part of which she resided the remainder of her lifetime. Her and her husband were blessed with seven sons and one daughter. Four sons, 29 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren survive her. She was the last one of the Bonnel family that built the old Stone Barn one mile north of Dover, which today is one of the oldest landmarks in the center of the county. Her remains were followed and laid to rest in the Hoover cemetery, by a large concourse of friends who wished to show their esteem and respect to a gold old pioneer lady who had made a host of friends during her lifetime. She joined the Presbyterian church in girlhood and remained a consistent member until the end. There were three sons, Sylvanus of Salem, IA, Harvey S. of Oklahoma City, and Albert present at the funeral; also the following relatives; Mr. George W. Bonnell of Lincoln, NE; Miss Minnie Bonnell of Atchison, KS, Mrs. Mazie Fitgerals of Burlington, IA, Mrs. John Jarvis of Wever, IA, and Mrs. H. B. Massey of Salem, IA
