Clipping from Logan Iowa paper Mrs. Rachel Ann Welch, one of Iowas' early pioneers passed away here at the home of her great grandson, Ted Logan about 9:30 p.m. July 23, 1940 at the age of 98 years 5 months and 21 days. She had been active until only a few days before her death. The extrem heat and infinitives of old age caused her condition to weaken. In childhood and young womanhood she experienced all the hardships of the early pioneer days. She went with her parents by covered wagon to the vicinity of Ft. Dodge, Iowa. She and her sister drove the family herd of sheep part of the way across the praires into Iowa. The family lived in a log cabin at Brighton, Iowa while Henry was in the Civil War. Mr. Welch was a member of the posse that went searching for the Indians that conducted the Spirit Lake massacre. In 1883 they moved to Logan, Iowa. Clipping information: Carroll Knauss, Logan Iowa
