She died Saturday afternoon at her home here. The Rev Harvey Quandt officiated and burial was in Maple Grove cemetery under direction of McFadden Funeral home. Casket bearers were grandsons Lyle Chesnut, Don Chesnut, Ray Chesnut, John Chesnut, Leland Keith and Merrill Keith. Mrs Keith was born at Washington, IA 15 March 1870 the daughter of James and Rachel Ann Graham Hunter. She ws one of 9 children and the family came to Audubon county in covered wagons in 1872 just 8 months after Mrs Hunter died. They settled in Melville twp (east of Audubon) on a farm along with Mr Hunter's brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs S.A. Graham. The Grahams later became prominent in politics in Audubon county. Mrs. Keith's father built many of the bridges in Melville twp and had a large hand in building the now-defunct Melville Center Methodist church. At the time of her 100th birthday celebration, Mrs Keith recalled that the land where the city of Audubon now is located was nothing but prairie land and Indians roamed the vicinity when she came to the area. Mrs Keith's family came to Audubon county 6 years before the city was platted. Mrs Keith was married to Preston J Keith 22 Sep 1887 in Audubon and they farmed until 1920 when they moved to the home where Mrs Keith died. Her husband died in 1929. Until her death Mrs Keith made her home with a daughter, Esther, who is a retired Audubon high school teacher. At her 100th birthday observance. Mrs Keith was able to read without eye glasses and was a jovial and spry woman. Had she lived about 3 more weeks, Mrs Keith would have been 103. During her entire life she never was a patients in a hospital. Surviving besides her daughter, Esther, are 2 other daughters, Mrs Cecil Chesnut of Adair and Mrs Collis (Juanita) Smith of Anita; a son, Clyde Keith of Audubon; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
