Read More	Obit: P J Keith, long time Audubon resident, died Tuesday morning at the Audubon hospital shortly after 7, 12 hours after he had been struck down while enroute to his home at 10 Freeman Ave by a Ford touring car driven by Melvin Bladt, 16-year old Audubon high-school freshman. Mr Keith from the time of the accident until his death had remained in an unconscious condition at the hospital , and hopes that he would recover had been practically abandoned several hours before his death occurred. The immediate cause of his death according to the doctor who attended him was concussion of the brain. Mr Keith suffered a broken artery at the left side of his scalp which necessitated the taking of 2 stitches. He lost considerable blood before the wound could be clossed. The doctor and hospital attendants found no indication that his skull had been fractured, although the former stated that a fracture of the inner plate would have been possible No indications of body or internal injuries were found. The fatal accident occurred between 6:30 and 7 pm Monday in from of the TW Staley home on South Division street, just east of the Washington street intersection. Mr Keith and P L Hansen, a partner in the grocery firm of Keith & Hansen with Mr Keith's son Clyde, were enroute to their homes for supper. Walking south across the South Division street street pavement, they had almost reached the south curb when the car driven by Bladt, which had been proceeding south on Washington street, struck Mr Mr Keith just after turning east onto S Division street, which is also US highway 71. Mr Keith was struck by the right fender of the car and thrown into the air, falling head first upon the concrete curb at the south of the pavement. He was placed unconscious in the tonneau of the car and rushed to the hospital where he died 12 hours later without having regained consciousness. The car being driven by Bladt was a Ford touring, owned by his father, Rasmus Bladt. The only occupant besides the driver was Clarence Thysen, young man residing a short distance west of Audubon. Bladt, after driving the injured man to the hospital, reported the accident at the office of Sheriff Fred Clemmensen. Mr Keith's son, Clyde Keith, had left the store with his father and P L Hansen. He had been detained when he posted a letter and, having failed to overtake the other two, witnessed the fatal accident from a short distance. He stated that Bladt rounded the corner at a high rate of speed and failed to observe the stop sign which is situated on Washington street just north of South Division street intersection. Bladt stated that the brakes on his car were defective and had failed to work. Mr Keith had been a resident of this county for 47 years. He was 65 years old. Born 11 Jul 1864 at Fremont, IA, he came to Audubon county in 1882 and was married 22 Sep 1887 to Anna Hunter, whose parents were among the pioneers of this part of the county. Hr and Mrs Keith made their home on a farm in Melville twp,until their retirement and removal to Audubon 10 years ago. He had, for years, been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of this city. Surviving him, besides the widow, are 5 children as follows: Clyde Keith, H D Keith, Mrs Cecil Chesnut of Adair; Miss Esther Keith, a teacher in the Audubon schools and Miss Juanita Keith who is a teacher in the schools of Casey. There are also 2 brothers; B A Keith of Audubon and Gus Keith of Los Angeles, CA; and 3 sisters Mrs Minnie Hunter of Glidden, Mrs Nellie McIntire of Oklahoma City, OK and Miss Mabel Keith, a teacher in the Audubon schools. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 pm at the M E church, the Rev W M Brooks officiating. A coroner's jury composed of George Wever, P A Rasmussen and J J Ruhs began an inquest Tuesday meeting with County Attorney S C Kerberg and County Coroner F H McFadden. The inquest was adjourned 3 hours later following funeral services for Mr Keith∼Son of Jesse Collins Keith and Mary Canon. Married Rachel A. Hunter on September 22, 1887 in Audubon, Audubon, Iowa. They had at least five children.
